Glen Johnson has agreed a four-year contract with Liverpool after completing his transfer from Portsmouth.
The 24-year-old right-back completed his move for a fee believed to be £17million, although much of that will be offset by money still owed from Peter Crouch's transfer to Fratton Park last summer.
Benitez has already accepted he paid over the odds for the England international but stressed there were many factors which made the deal the right one for the club.
"We knew the market was going to be difficult this summer and some of it has been crazy," said Benitez.
"Manchester City and Chelsea were there - they were making offers. We had to be quick and the club acted quickly.
"It was down to the player whether he chose us or City or Chelsea and he chose us."

signing floella benjamin wont help...
yep liverpool are deffinetely going to be top of the table this season
Rafa, your next moves ought to be the following--and ASAP:
Get Jenas, Lennon or Rossi, Dzeko or Hulk & Boka (Stuttgart);
keep the starting 11, plus Agger, Benaoun, & Usua.
Just sell the rest and bring youngsters from your farm system.
Only then you will lift the trophy!

Great signing for liverpool!!!! wel done rafa!! he is probs the best english right back at the mo and will ahve glory days at anfield. Now rafa buy david silva plz plz plz! YNWA
top quality signiing just need 2 sort out left back now
OWLED GLENN JANSAN LACKS LEEK A WEMON. HE NEEDS TAY GAT THON HAIR CUT AFF
Glen is the best english right back at the moment and i hope he does well for lfc
All the best Glen Johnson
Got to be better than Arbeloa in my opinion.Jamie cant keep covering for Arbeloa and its nice to see an attacking wingback who can actually cross a ball.I think he is a good buy as he has experiance in the premiership with a proven track record over the last couple of years.Come on Rafa just make sure you get some more decent players in and dump the dead wood!
LouB - the england manager disagrees with you. so does the liverpool manager, the chelsea manager AND the city manager. are they all wrong or are YOU talking out of your arse?
A few good games for England against poor opposisition and suddenly he’s a superstar! Looks a bit overweight and a few yards off the pace to me; this is a guy who couldn’t make Chelsea’s bench most weeks. & when he plays against decent teams, you’ll see he’s about 15 million overpriced!

Rafa before I forget, please take a watch on the South African keeper. I think we need him this summer should in case reina is injured or ......khune is very good at the post. He is like a magnet to the ball. He is worth a red shirt. Thanks

totally agree, excellent signing.may not be worth £17M BUT as the new rules comong into force regarding number of foreign players in champions league, best english right back by a mile.
Signed for a big club....
Glen Johnson is a good player £18m ? that's questionable. I think rafa could have possibly spent his money more wisely elsewhere.
Glen had a bad time at chelsea, he was a young lad that probably needed to play a lot of football which he didn't get at chelsea, so he did the right thing and moved to a different club to play football (portsmouth) , a lot of players would have quite happily warmed the bench so credit to him. Maybe he is the sort of player we need at anfield, someone who wants to play.
In Rafa we trust!

Welcom Glen, Glory days beckon!
