Quinn wants World Cup in Sunderland

Fri, 26 Jun 09:37:22 2009

Niall Quinn is hoping to generate the kind of atmosphere he enjoyed as a player in the Far East by bringing the World Cup to Sunderland.

The Black Cats officially launched their candidacy for the Football Association's attempt to stage the showcase tournament finals in 2018 on Thursday.

Quinn said of his experience at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea: "They put performances on for us as we came off the training ground. They did it every day and they just wanted to show off their culture to us, they were so proud of where they were from. Sunderland people and this region are as well, and it's an opportunity to do that."

He added: "I went out to Japan and Korea and that was just absolutely phenomenal, inspiring.

"You often see training grounds here when the team is training and you might have 100 kids - there were thousands at every training session.

"It will stay with me forever. I know all the Irish team, certainly the mature ones, would say to you it was the best experience.

"I can fast-forward in my mind to the Brazilians coming here and being bowled over - 'By God, this isn't London, this is totally different, this is something we didn't know about.' This is an opportunity for us to do that."

  4. Serious answer newcastleian1- it was arranged to mark his years of service with Sunderland and the Republic of Ireland (hence why we played them). Prior to the game, Quinny announced where the money would be going (children's services at Sunderland General and a hospital in Dublin) and the match effectively morphed into a joint venture. Glad to be of service.

  5. safcalsftm.....serious question? was quinns"testimonial" a game to mark his years of service, or was it like a charity match for the kids of sunderland and dublin?

  12. cameron w - I say what I mean - I'm not a hypocrite and I know other SAFC fans who feel the same about NUFC as I do - my view has been moulded by personal experience as I have described recently. I know many Mags who would like SAFC to go down the river. I also know fans of both clubs who don't share these views. That's fine by me, its all a matter of opinion and I'm quite happy for people not to agree with me, after all it would be a boring world if everyone agreed.

    Wrong!
The listed buildings are only on one side; nothing to stop it being extended on the other 3 sides!

  20. newcastleian1 - WRONG

Stadium of light can be extended to 64,000. Sid James's can't because of the listed buildings in the way.
