Niall Quinn is hoping to generate the kind of atmosphere he enjoyed as a player in the Far East by bringing the World Cup to Sunderland.
The Black Cats officially launched their candidacy for the Football Association's attempt to stage the showcase tournament finals in 2018 on Thursday.
Quinn said of his experience at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea: "They put performances on for us as we came off the training ground. They did it every day and they just wanted to show off their culture to us, they were so proud of where they were from. Sunderland people and this region are as well, and it's an opportunity to do that."
He added: "I went out to Japan and Korea and that was just absolutely phenomenal, inspiring.
"You often see training grounds here when the team is training and you might have 100 kids - there were thousands at every training session.
"It will stay with me forever. I know all the Irish team, certainly the mature ones, would say to you it was the best experience.
"I can fast-forward in my mind to the Brazilians coming here and being bowled over - 'By God, this isn't London, this is totally different, this is something we didn't know about.' This is an opportunity for us to do that."

There you go then, you've admitted it once again - ' I live in hope that the Toon will go down the river (so I can dance a jig outside SJP). '
How on earth can you come on here saying it would be great for the North East if it got to hold World Cup games, and then wish the demise of one of the North East's biggest institutions! You are full of c(rap) and neither a North Easterner nor a football fan, as neither would wish that on any club. This isn't football rivallry and it most certainly ain't football banter; it is truly sickening behaviour from what appears to be a bitter, twisted sad old f(art) - urgh you just churn my stomach! What's worse is that you probably have Grandkids too; do you promote this filth to them too?
newcastleian 1 (post 20) - as I have said elsewhere, either in response to you or cameron w (are you one and the same?), all clubs have their idiots, its just that from where I have stood or sat over the years NUFC appear to have more than their fair share. Perhaps I'm biased, but that's how it appears to me. I could also refer you to the PC at the SOL who I saw flash an enamel Newcastle badge outside the stadium before the derby match last season. No doubt, you won't believe me, but I was there.
safcalsftm...no offence taken regarding maggie,i suffered under her regime(shipyards early 80s)so no love lost their! r.e the s.o.s for the world cup,why not? its a decent football stadium(i was at england, turkey game),as regarding the 60.000,they would have to weigh up the cost of it to see if it was worth it for a few games,or they might have extended it by then!!! just as sjp could of been extended!!! you never know??
My post 21 - one of these days I'll learn to proof-read. Of course "Stadium of life" should read Stadium of Light - Doh! Mind Stadium of life is better than than some of the alternative names it gets given !!
P.S. I'm sorry if my comments regarding Mrs T offend you, they weren't meant to, its just the strength of my feelings towards that woman. I know I joke about Mike Ashley being vindictive towards Newcastle fans but that woman truly was vindictive towards the working class (particularly those in the North and South Wales and especially those linked with the coal mines). I don't regret what I said though, however extreme it may sound (and I know I'm not alone).
Anyway, let's get ball to talking football (before I give myself a coronary).
Why not the Stadium of lifeas a World Cup venue? (The stadium was built such that capacity could be increased to 60,000 plus relatively easily.) And for that matter (as I posted elsewhere), why not both SOL and SJPas World Cup venues? If we take off our red and white or black and white blinkers off (whichever apply), both grounds must be among the top 6 or 7 stadia in the Country.
safcalsftm....like i say you can dish it out,but when your stuck for a response, you call us thugs, scum etc,you bang on about the pitch invasion 1990? what about the mackem chavs last season? the mags would not of responded if the mackem goons had not baited them!!and its not the 1st time the goons have ran on the pitch? is it?
newcastleian1, in response to your post 17 I would refer you to my post 18 below.
cameron (post 13) - this is where you and I differ. You said and I quote: "Everything i say on these pages should be taken with a mountain of salt". For your information 80-90% of what I say on these pages is either true, what I believe to be true, or my honest opinion. To give you a clue, most of the comments that are most likely to wind up you and your chums fall into one of those three categories. You might not like it much and I don't expect you too, that is the nature of football rivalries - especially when that rivalry is SAFC and NUFC.
P.S. There was way over "60 or 70 children" on the SJP pitch in that 1990 match - for a kick-off, I wouldn't call guys in their 20's "children" and secondly, having checked through my football memorabilia I note that the Journal referred to the pitch being invaded by "around 500 idiots" (what an anorak I am to keep newspaper cuttings - thought I'd better get that one in myself, self-depricating humour might prevent the jibe?).
safcalsftm....you are a total bullshitter mate,i will never forgive the mackem scum for attacking the family turnstile,i will always remember maggie regarding the shipyards and worse the coalminers, but i would not rejoice in anyones death(even if she was a mackem), you keep this self-importance ive got inside information @#$% about the toon, stick to fiddling the books of the small time companies, and stop talking bollix!!
newcastleian1 etc. (post 12) - I was at all three games I referred to and will never ever forgive your lot for their moronic actions. Simple as. Just as I look forward to the death of Maggie Thatcher (so I can dance of her grave), I live in hope that the Toon will go down the river (so I can dance a jig outside SJP). Unfortunatley, while the former will happen sooner rather than later, in my heart of hearts I've got to admit that the latter is unlikely, although (apologies for keeping banging on this one) I'm told administration (with resultant points deduction) followed by a rescue package is still a possibility. You can disbelieve me, post a retort and/ or give me a thumbs down but I am only repeating what I have been told (let's just say that not everyone who works for or on behalf of the club is a Toon fan!). Enough said.
cameron....also safcalsftm bangs on about silly little t. shirts, new strip(their is a decent team who play in yellow......brazil)steven taylor,2- 1(must have forgot 4-1 even chopra scored)toon doon,i bet he has bought the lot from that comic a love supreme(probably 2 for 1),can you imagine having a good night out with your mates and the pen-pusher walks in and sits next to you!!! zzzzzzzzzzz
cameron...well said mate, everything you comment on this clown twists it, he can call us geordie scum, skunks, yet i mention something controversial, i am this big bad nasty thug, something i assure you i am not.even when they were s...e (last season)they never admitted it and kept sniping at us,we admit we are poor, but will stand up for our club, because we are proud to be geordies and proud of newcastle united (not the owners).
safcalsftm
More lies yet again from you; 'the 500-600 pathetic imbeciles invading the SJP pitch trying to get the match abandoned' was more like 60 or 70 children . . . i should know because i was there pal, and NO i do not condone it!
I also remember a handful of sunderland fans jumping onto the pitch when you scored that first goal, what were they doing in the paddock in the old West Stand - NOT their allocated area, i should know because that is where i was standing! Now read this properly will you!!!!! As i have said CONTINUOUSLY, i owe the City of Sunderland a lot and i have never ever wished anything bad on the City of Sunderland or sunderland foootball club. I do not resort to wishing illness on you or questioning your private affairs, that is a sure sign of desperation on your part. I will say it yet again, you are an out-and-out bully, you have proven it by the personal attacks on me YET AGAIN. Everything i say on these pages should be taken with a mountain of salt, surely you as the'master wind-up merchant' should recognise that; you take it all so personally and you ought to be ashamed of yourself, you big girl's blouse.
ps.
Why would attending Sunderland Uni stick in my gullet; i CHOSE Sunderland Uni, above (amongst many others) Northumbria and Newcastle - do you really think i am as shallow and narrow-minded as you!
safcalsftm....for your information i was not applauding thuggery, never have and never will(was not at the gillingham game or in the fulwell.you bang on about due diligence(big yawn)what va sad little world you live in thinking you know it all!! and your mackem chums are now saying your pitch is bigger than ours!!!our record in the prem is far superior to yours(worst team in history..sorry 2nd)did i mention europe!!!so we are in the fizzy pop league so what,we have some decent cities to visit,on a par with bolton, wigan, burnley, wigan, you can bang on about shearer, ashley, relegation, but i think you should be more concerned about brucies so called harrods signings.
cameron - I'll admit it, I lost my rag with newcastleian1 prize eejit and it spilt over. He pressed the buttons by applauding thuggery from your lot: the moronic Skunks in the Fulwell End in '85 (why weren't they arrested?), more moronic Skunks at Roker Park with the Gillingham fans in '87 (why were they let in? they should have been arrested for incitement) and last but not least the 500-600 pathetic imbeciles invading the SJP pitch trying to get the match abandoned (just because you were losing) in the 1990 play-off semi final (why weren't you made to play X number of games the following season behind closed doors or docked points?)
Call my team by all means (we all have a go at each other, all part of the fun) but applaud mindless thuggery and call my City (as you do all to often, even though you have the audacity to attend Uni here - that must really stick in your gullet, would no-one else take you?) and too right, I'll kick back. Over and Out.
P.S. As you have said elsewhere, the pages are for everyone so I think its time you stopped being a hypocrite! For as long as you and your chums comment on the SAFC pages, I'll do the same on the NUFC pages, as and when I feel like it and no attempts to bully me will stop me.
Nice one Niall... We hopefully will get to share in an incredidible opportunity, whilst giving an insight in to the cultural and social (friendliness) qualities of the people of Sunderland. I really hope you can pull it off, you deserve the support of all of us, not just football supporters. What if anything can we do to help?
Cameron, you still here.
safcalsft
Well why don't you keep off the NUFC pages you hypocrite!
You see, you're at it again aren't you bully-boy - you're happily dishing it on the NUFC pages but when it comes to taking it, you're losing your rag and name-calling again!!!
I suggest you exit these pages before you do yourself some harm healthwise old man!
BOOORING!
I see we have the sniping Skunks here again. Nothing on the NUFC pages so they come here to whine. How pathetic. Can't these morons get a life? Relegation is proving a very bitter pill to swallow. Its down to one word ... Jealousy.
