Former head coach Brian Ashton, dismissed after steering England to second place in the World Cup and Six Nations, has turned down the top job at the national academy.

The RFU said that Ashton, who was replaced by former captain Martin Johnson in April, would instead provide the English game's governing body with consultancy services.

"I have decided not to accept the post offered to me by the RFU... as this was a full time post which would not have allowed me to develop my own business and pursue other interests," said Ashton, who is setting up his own consultancy company.

Ashton, 61, took over from Andy Robinson in December 2006 with England at a low ebb.

He failed to produce consistent levels of performance, with the team swinging erratically between good results and humiliating defeats.

  1. Too right Brian... you inherited a Turd and managed to polish it enough to get to a world cup final 8 months later.
Your reward was to be royally butt-fucked out of the job and replaced by a 'figure head' with no coaching experience at all.
I'd tell the RFU to take their acadamy role and shove it up their assholes!.
Go get involved in the Argentinian set up and come back and rub some RFU noses in it.
Oh and BTW if England progress anywhere under Johnson it will be entirely down to the backs coaching of Brian Smith
