Premier League - Round-up: Celtic down Spurs

Eurosport - Sun, 26 Jul 21:39:00 2009

Celtic's second-string side warmed up for this week's Champions League qualifier by defeating Tottenham 2-0 to win the Wembley Cup and highlighting the problems facing Harry Redknapp.

FOOTBALL 2009-2010 Friendly Match Celtic Darren O'Dea - 0

Victory, courtesy of goals by Chris Killen and Georgios Samaras (pictured), means Tony Mowbray's men won the friendly tournament ahead of Wednesday's clash against Dinamo Moscow and they have still not conceded a goal in four pre-season matches.

Spurs boss Redknapp, who has watched his side getting outplayed by two reserve sides during the tournament, has major worries at the heart of his defence as Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson are sidelined, leaving no recognised centre-back.

It only took Celtic eight minutes to expose Spurs' fragile defence. Paul Caddis shifted past Benoit Assou-Ekotto on the right and whipped in a cross, with Killen getting in front of Chimbonda to plant his header past Heurelho Gomes.

Frenchman Dorian Dervite was fault for the second goal, courtesy of Samaras five minutes before the break.

Samaras was in his own half when he poked the ball past the 21-year-old and there was plenty of time to catch the Greece international, who was hardly known for his pace while at Manchester City for two years.

Instead, Samaras carried the ball into the penalty and executed a precise finish across Gomes.

In the day's other game in the London tournament, Barcelona beat Al Ahly 4-1 with Lionel Messi making a cameo appearance.

Sunderland secured an impressive 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Amsterdam tournament on Sunday night thanks to two goals from Kieran Richardson.

The former Manchester United midfielder opened the scoring just before half-time from the penalty spot after Steed Malbranque was tripped by Juan Valera inside the area.

And Richardson doubled the Wearsiders' advantage with four minutes to go, coolly slotting home Carlos Edwards' pass from the edge of the area.

Atletico, fourth in La Liga last season, rarely threatened Martin Fulop's goal despite fielding Diego Forlan in the first half and Sergio Aguero after the break.

  1. to be fair, a team of celtic reserves pumped a spurs team with 8 of its 11 first team.

EPL are afraid of us, and rightly so...silly wee clubs.

  3. The game was a friendly and pretty much meaningless but it's still very very nice to win as many games as possible.

10 changes from the game on Friday too is also quite heartening for the Celtic fans.

As for the banter going back and forth, InverK pretty much sums it up with his last line ;-)

  4. #106 mambles; bet you wish you'd thought up the 'pub team' jibe all by yourself...no doubt however, you'll get a lot of mileage out of it. Why don't you just copy and paste entire posts, that way you won't even have to tax your brain cell. BTW we eat our first born and pee sitting down, we eat boiled ham raw and torture haggis before it's killed to tenderise it.......but we still wiped the floor with you lot....live with it!

Celtic 2 spurs 0 get over it you english loudmouths, and when it really mattered you'll find Celtic still did the business, blackburn 2-0, Liverpool 2-0, leeds 2-1, man utd 1-0, your league aint the best, i think Barcelona and Celtic keep proving that point, if you cant beat a team from "a mickey mouse league" i'd keep my mouth shut.

  12. well and truely beaten, first goal summed up our central defence problems, unmarked free header!!
The young players looked promising in the second half though.
To be honest Celtic were nothing special, we just never really played well and missed a couple of decent chances.

  14. Problems in defence, and not much time left to fix it ! Attack could have been a lot better too, what kind of a season looms for Spurs ?? Hopefully only playing in a limited fashion for pre-season, but on track when season proper starts, COYS !

  17. Harry's still got a lot of work to do; it's just not good enough losing to a scottish pub team - because that's what they all are in the land of the drunken, frock wearing transvestites (although they call them kilts to hide this penchant for wearing women's clothes).

Sadly, it's also time to tell Ledley the 'bad news'.

  20. This wasn't just a Celtic second string. We brought on 3 third string subs! McCourt should have made it 3-0. Spurs are in serious trouble. I realise this was a friendly but if that is all they can manage.......I'm not a big fan of the 'Premiership'. They are, for the most part, overpaid and overrated. Let's hope oursleves and the huns can do well in Europe, then we can try and get back some of the money that Setanta and Sky screwed us for this season.
