Jurgen Melzer will play Andrey Golubev in the German Open final after they beat Andreas Seppi and Florian Mayer respectively in Hamburg.
Third-seeded Austrian Melzer smashed Seppi 6-4 6-2, while Germany’s Mayer failed to add to his win over former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero by going down 7-6(6) 6-4 to Kazakh Golubev.
Melzer was the only seed left at Hamburg but started well to take the first set with a single break.
Seppi had some chances in the second, with Melzer saving four break points, but the Austrian took both break points that were presented to him.
Golubev was a surprise winner over Nikolay Davydenko in the semis and continued his form against Mayer.
Both players broke in the first set but it was Golubev who edged the tie break.
Despite playing relatively poorly in the second set - he only had a first-serve percentage of 43 compared to Mayer’s high 60s – Golubev got the break to set up a shot at a first career title.
