Boss wary of upset potential

Tue 26 Aug, 05:00 PM

Craig Brewster has warned Inverness about the dangers of complacency ahead of their Co-operative Insurance Cup second-round tie with Arbroath. The Highlanders know all about cup shocks themselves, having recorded a famous 3-1 victory over Celtic in the Scottish Cup in 2000 which brought about the end of manager John Barnes' reign at Celtic Park.

Caley Thistle will arrive at Gayfield Park for Wednesday's match as firm favourites to progress to the next round of the competition, but the Inverness manager has told his players not to expect an easy encounter when they face the Second Division side.

Brewster said: "It will be a cup final for them and a great chance for them to do well against Premier League opposition on their own park. I know their players will be going out there desperate to do well."

The last time the sides met was in Brewster's first game in charge after his return to the Highland club last August, and the former Dundee United boss got off to a winning start with a 3-1 victory.

Since that evening, Arbroath have secured promotion to the Second Division thanks to a 2-1 aggregate victory over Stranraer in the final of last season's play-offs.

Brewster believes that if his players perform as they did on Saturday for the first 45 minutes against Hibernian, when they dominated proceedings, they will have no problems getting past the Red Lichties.

Hibernian fought back from 1-0 down to draw 1-1, but Brewster saw plenty of promise in his team's display.

"We have to be professional and positive and do what we did during the first half on Saturday," said Brewster.

"If we do that then I'll be happy. However I'm sure Arbroath will be right up for the game and we have got to be ready for that."

The Inverness boss has hinted that he may make a few alterations to his starting 11 for the clash with the talented young trio of Rory McAllister, Garry Wood and Iain Vigurs likely to feature at some stage.

"There might be one or two changes, but there won't be many," said Brewster.
