Former world number one Amelie Mauresmo reached the quarter-finals of WTA New Haven while defending champion Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the second round.
Second seed Wozniacki eased through with a 6-0 6-0 rout of Romanian Edina Gallovits in a match which took just 43 minutes.
The Dane beat Russian Anna Chakvetadze in last year's final.
Eighth-seeded Mauresmo bashed Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-1 6-1 in the second round.
The Frenchwoman, twice a Major champion, finished as runner-up in 2005.
Mauresmo was joined in the quarter-finals by 2008 New Haven runner-up Chakvetadze, who outlasted Austrian Sybille Bammer 4-6 6-4 7-5.
Marion Bartoli and Samantha Stosur advanced to the second round with victories over Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Alize Cornet respectively.

Ian, she doesn't have to prove anything to anyone, anymore. She already did it in 2006. Since then she has had a lot of health issues and injuries. I know, she is not mentaly tough (if she was she would have won against Safina in Wimbledon), but her tennis is the most exciting to watch between all the other women remaining.
