The FA have charged Watford manager Adrian Boothroyd with abusive and/or insulting words towards referee Stuart Attwell last Saturday.
Boothroyd was sent from the technical area during the match, notorious for the award of a 13th-minute goal to Reading when linesman Nigel Bannister farcically flagged for a goal instead of a corner.
Despite not a single Reading player appealing for the 'goal' 25-year-old referee Attwell awarded the goal.
Boothroyd admitted after the game, which finished 2-2: "I've never seen anything like it. It's like a UFO landing, a mistake like that.
"I've been to see the referee and in fairness he's only going on what the linesman says. He's working in a team and if someone comes in his ear telling him it's a goal then I suppose he's got to give it.
"I thought it was a goal-kick. What do you say to that? It was a strange sort of feeling because I was trying to calm my team down and get them going but all I could think was 'what was that for?'."
Boothroyd has until October 10 to respond to the charge.

Well said Russel ,I totally agree, You have to wonder how long, how many times are these idiots in charge of our game are going to turn football ino a laughing stock!!!
I hope Ady appeals and if not I hope the lino and ref get charged and sent to specsavers!
I agree with Martin. I was at the game too and Boothroyd's constant ranting on the touchline was impacting badly on the game. He certainly deserved to be sent off. Can I also repeat, that as someone who was there I did not have a clue what actually happened with the 'phantom goal' until I got home. It's all very weel complaining at the unfair behaviour of the Reading players but none of them were watching endless action replays on the telly. At the actual game, it was impossible to know exactly what had happened. Waldemar
I was at the game and Mr Boothroyd was not sent to the stand for ranting about the goal that never was but for complaining about a throw in during the second half.
He was reported to the Referee by the 4th official who called the Ref over. Unfortunately the referee should have calmed the situation down rather than send aidy to the stand as it was a highly fueled game. No common sense again from the ref.
It is unfortunate that this report seems to point to the fact the Aidy was sent to the stand for complaining about the goal which he was not.
so much for this country being a democracy although the whole world has seen that it was never a goal and if one voices an opinion you still get punished does the "F" in F.A. stand for Ferrari??
Unbeleivable - if you cannot voice your opinion however harshly at such a travesty - then what can you do ? It's time that football changes so that either a referee or panel can recind decisions after the game, or introduces technology to reduce this stupidity. To discipline the manager after such a poor poor decision is not justice. How can you expect people to have respect in any shape or form when decisions like this are allowed to stand - it just perpetuates a greedy cheating behaviour set that is all too dominent in our society and diminishes the cause of fair play.
