Premier League - Goal of the week: Owen rolls back years

Eurosport - Sat, 26 Sep 12:22:00 2009

Michael Owen's dramatic late winner in the Manchester derby has been voted goal of the week by Eurosport-Yahoo! readers.

owen - 0

Manchester United's summer signing came off the bench to settle a thrilling match at Old Trafford with a fantastically cool finish in the 96th minute - a real hark back to the good old days for the one-time England ace.

His effort garnered 32 per cent of the vote while Craig Bellamy's screamer in the same game was your second favourite goal of the week, amassing an impressive 4,959 votes.

The West Ham defence had no clue how to deal with a mazy run by Fernando Torres at Upton Park and the Liverpool hitman's strike edges out Thomas Vermaelen's wonder goal against Wigan - his second of the match - into third place by just two per cent of the votes.

No less spectacular, but not quite as well appreciated were Gabriel Agbonlahor's off-balance net buster against Portsmouth and David Nugent's fine effort from outside the box against Sunderland. The two strikes managed a mere five per cent between them.

Goal of the week result:

1. Michael Owen (Man Utd v Man City) - 6,221 votes

2. Craig Bellamy (1st goal, Man City v Man Utd) - 4,959 votes

3. Fernando Torres (1st goal, Liverpool at West Ham) - 3,890 votes

4. Thomas Vermaelen (2nd goal, Arsenal v Wigan) - 3,567 votes

5. Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa v Portsmouth) - 603 votes

6. David Nugent (2nd goal, Burnley v Sunderland) - 440 votes

  2. To Glenn T. Bellamy's goal was in regulation time, therefore we did not need the time to equalise, seems to me you need to understand football before the chip on your shoulder gets to much for you. Oh! the four Minutes, well that in itself was debatable, given there were only three subs from both sides up to that point, the trainers were conspicuous by there absence, and there was not any time wasting by both sides Mmmm dose not add up eh. Anyway like i have said we have moved on and have bigger fish to fry and arguing the @#$% with a no hoper is a waste of time, and in this case the ref is not around to allow you the extra time to get back. Final whistle! you won,Game over so move on, we have!!

  15. wow you can tell manu fans who dont know anything about football run and rule this site...
owen unmarked all the time in the world no even first touch and you call that the weeks no.1 goal!
bellamy created it himself with pressure and scored a wonderful goal
vermaelen first a one two and a class strike any striker would be proud of
nugent moved away from the defender and bam! one sublime strike
torres wriggled through the whole of the defense and scored a wonderful goal from very near the post
gabbys goal wasnt that great helped by torrid defending but the way he didnt allow any one to catch him was the real deal
in any case if owen had been in any of these situations he would have ended up injured

I was born with an extra brain. A liverpool fan begged me so much during our kindergarten years and I give him a hint on how to have two brains.....

Tie a manchester united scarf over your head and run around anfield. I was not to explain to him where he'd buy the scarf cos he was to use his imagination....and he'd no money.
