Serie A - Sampdoria move top

Eurosport - Sat, 26 Sep 22:09:00 2009

Sampdoria sank champions Inter Milan 1-0 with a second-half Giampaolo Pazzini goal to go top of Serie A on Saturday.

FOOTBALL 2009-10 Serie A Sampdoria Giampaolo Pazzini - 0

The forward side-footed in a Daniele Mannini cross in the 72nd minute after a slip-up by Inter full back Davide Santon to give the Genoa side a home win and 15 points from six games.

Inter are in second spot two points further back and alongside Fiorentina after they won 1-0 at Livorno with a 76th-minute penalty by Stevan Jovetic.

Juventus, also on 13 points, will go solo at the summit on 16 points if they beat Bologna at home on Sunday.

Inter came close with a powerful Samuel Eto'o shot shortly before Pazzini struck but the champions could have few complaints about their first league defeat this term.

"It was a very important goal in front of this full house," Pazzini told Sky television. "We're top. It's a great night."

"We picked ourselves up immediately after Florence," he added, referring to Wednesday's 2-0 defeat at Fiorentina that ended a run of four wins.

Samp midfielder Angelo Palombo fluffed the best chance of an intense first half after an Antonio Cassano cross created mayhem in the middle of the box.

Cassano, snubbed by Inter when they were searching for a playmaker in the close season, also had a good opportunity in the 39th minute but bizarrely he went to ground instead of going for goal having skipped past Lucio, getting himself booked.

Inter substitute Ricardo Quaresma had an equaliser disallowed for offside and Samp keeper Luca Castellazzi produced a fine save to keep out a Lucio free kick in injury time.

Fiorentina share second place with Juve and Inter after they put aside the turmoil caused by president Andrea Della Valle quitting this week to beat struggling Tuscan rivals Livorno.

The spot-kick was awarded for a foul by Marcus Diniz on Italy forward Alberto Gilardino, who will be suspended for Fiorentina's big Champions League clash against Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Florence side had to cling on for victory after having Dario Dainelli sent off for a second yellow card in the closing stages.

  1. What happened inter? I guess you miss Ibra? You know Barca got the better deal. look at eto'o, he has scored 3 goals no assists in 6 matches, and he is not there when you need him, like in the match with sampdoria, no compare that with Ibra, he has 5 goals and 3 assists in 5 matches, and he has scored every single match for Barca. Now you know who is better. eto'o only did better because he had Barcelona to help him, not that he does not have Barcelona he is not doing so well.

  5. the Sampdoria - Inter game was top class for the full 90mins....for some reason that stadium brings out the best in Italian Football...the games are always played at a very fast pace and you usually get alot of goals and action...good job by the gaffer Del Neri to outwit Mourinho today...Cassano is top class, insane that he is not considered for Italian NT

  6. Not so unlucky Mourinho! Victory well deserved for Sampdoria and the coaching of Luigi Del Neri. Sampdoria played more like a team whereas Inter's game was far less collective ... resting on individual exploits

  7. I'm west Ham till I die and I love the special 1!! The game needs colourful characters like him, who wants to listen to the Wengers or Megsons drone on till you fall asleep after a game. Yeah Mourinho of SAF are cockey but they more than deserve to be so fair play to them. Anyway this article is for sampdoria so hats off to them for topping the league, good luck!!

  10. I would have to disagree with you. The "special one" is a very colourful character and I have a good bit of time for him. And I'm not a Chelsea fan. I wouldn't say Chelsea are softies either - strength in all their team as seen last year against Barcelona. You obviously know very little about football I fear.

  11. Unlucky the so-called 'Special One' No-one in England likes him except for the Southern softies from Chelski
