Pair urge Caldwell to lower demands

Former Celtic favourites Frank McAvennie and Frank McGarvey have urged Gary Caldwell to do his talking on the park and lower his expectations over a wage rise.

The Scotland defender spoke out last week over the impasse surrounding his Celtic future. Caldwell is reportedly seeking about £20,000 a week to sign a new contract next summer in order to bring him in line with the club's top earners.

"It's Celtic we're talking about and you have got to be an exceptional player to get 20 grand a week," McAvennie said.

"Big John Hartson and Henrik (Larsson) were tremendous players, them and Chris Sutton were all getting decent money but they produced week in, week out. I think those days at Celtic are finished - unless you're a director!"

McGarvey also told Caldwell to concentrate on his game or risk losing the backing of the Celtic support.

"Is he on £9,000 a week now and he has been offered £12,000?" McGarvey said.

"I think to be offered a wage rise of £3,000 a week, for any Celtic supporter, they would all grab it.

"I can understand where Gary is coming from, he has been made captain and he is looking at a few players in the team that are getting much more and he just wants up to their level.

"But I don't think it should be done in public, it should be kept internal, and the timing is wrong."

  2. Greedy huge foreheaded @#$%. Half of the folk cant even get a job or are being laid off and here's this wee boy who thinks he's being treated unfailry even though he's earning more money in a week than alot of people will earn in a year. Get a grip Garry! You're not that special!! I'd tell him to f**k off personally.

  3. I liked the comment "I think to be offered a wage rise of £3,000 a week, for any Celtic supporter, they would all grab it. ".

A WAGE OF £3,000 A WEEK WOULD BE GRABBED BY THE MAJORITY OF CELTIC SUPPORTERS.

In way though McGarvey should think before stirring up the fans. McAvennie is right, Caldwell should deserve more ( IF HE CAN PRODUCE FORM WEEK IN WEEK OUT). His form of late hass been awful both for club and country. Put hime on a performance related salary. Give him his 20,000 if he play like a hero and deserves and charge him 20K if he plays like a donkey ( the way he has been playing recently).

  5. What has he done to merit a new contract nevermind a wage rise of 25%? He causes more problems than he's worth. If he doesn't like the offer on the table, let him go. I'm sure there are plenty of Championship or Division One teams that would take him off our hands.
Better still, offer him to the huns for free!
