Alonso wins in Singapore

Sun, 26 Sep 15:57:00 2010

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso held off Sebastian Vettel's hard-charging Red Bull to win an incident-packed Singapore Grand Prix and boost his chances of a third Formula One crown.

Championship leader Mark Webber finished third in the second Red Bull to increase his lead from five to 11 points in the standings with four races remaining.

The Australian again rode his luck, emerging unscathed from a collision with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton that forced his title rival to retire.

Webber has 202 points, Alonso moved up to second overall on 191 after two successive wins in Monza and Singapore, and Hamilton lies a further nine points adrift in third place.

Vettel sits one point further back and world champion Jenson Button, who finished fourth, rounds out the top five on 177 points.

A mere 25 points, the amount awarded for a victory, separates the top five.

Alonso won the scandal-tainted inaugural Singapore race for Renault in 2008 after his Brazilian team mate Nelson Piquet crashed deliberately to bring out the safety car and help the Spaniard win.

The safety car was again deployed this time but Alonso, starting aggressively from pole position, drove a brilliant race to hold off Vettel for 61 laps around the floodlit Marina Bay circuit.

After a gruelling two-hour street fight and an almighty last lap tussle, the double champion crossed the line just 0.2 seconds ahead of the German who had qualified alongside on the front row.

Starting the race in fifth place, Webber was the biggest winner of the day after gambling on an early pit stop during the first safety car period after three laps and working his way through the field for a well-earned podium.

Hamilton was the biggest loser, enduring his third retirement in four races.

The Briton thought he had passed Webber on turn seven following the second safety car period but was broadsided by the Australian going into the straight.

"I'm not really sure what happened," he said. "He was in my blind spot so I didn't even know he was still there.

"All I know is I went in, I didn't see anyone alongside me and the next thing I know is my tyre has blown and that's it."

The race ended in bizarre fashion with Heikki Kovalainen, already lapped, steered his flaming Lotus to the side of the finishing straight.

With smoke and flames billowing out behind him, the Finn jumped out and grabbed an extinguisher handed through the wire mesh to put out the fire himself as cars raced past.

I think you are completely missing the point too. I didn't respond to Klaus because I felt he was disagreeing with my opinion. What I was saying was that if he was going to ridicule my opinion he should at least put forward one of his own.Surely that is the nature of debate.
Also it doesn't matter if an opinion is put forward passively or aggressively.People have every right to agree or disagree if they choose. But to post a comment on this page ridiculing my opinion without putting forward one to rival it is frankly annoying.Too many people on these forums do this but if they want to disagree without putting one forward they should just click the thumb down button.
In regards to your opinion on Kimi, although I respect your opinion,I disagree with it.I understand you put it forward forcibly but it still doesn't change my view. The person I believe was the most naturally talented driver in the history of F1 was Jim Clark. If you feel like rejecting this view and telling me why you believe Kimi was I would be grateful to reply in kind. And who knows you might through your arguments just change my view.
After all that is the nature of debate and isn't that all I was trying to point out in the first place?

  2. Comment 178, kimi sat on his arse? he won a world championship with the team.....(yes he had a poor second season, and then the car wasn't competitive enough in his final season, and he still won a race) and JB does not play second fiddle to Lewis, how can the current world champion be second fiddle at any team......and it has been just over a decade since McClaren had a completly dominant car. As for Vettel wanting to go to Ferrai, i don't really think it will be all about money, the history and sucess of the team alone is enough to tempt almost anyone.

  3. Alonso was simply outstanding in Monza and Singapore, showing just why he is a double world champion, soon to be a triple a hope. But there are still incredibly 5 drivers in it, what an awesome season F1 has thrown up this time.

  4. stephen, so you're saying you don't agree with me? That's cool. I think Kimi raced his @#$% off that year, and reached out and took that WDC for his own. I think Lewis is really good, but he's no Kimi. Additionally, I love Webber, but Alonso sure looks like he's going to reach out and grab that WDC for his own this year; no ands ifs or buts. If you win the WDC, you earned it. The season is about 19 races long. The most consistent driver wins. It does not matter WHEN you acquire your points; the beginning of the year, the end ... it does not matter.

  10. Hi everybody, I am a Ferrari fan, and I like Hamilton. Just to prove that motor sport is like throwing dice. If you repeat the race five times you would probabily have five different races. Every race is a hsitory by itself. L U C K - is one of the factors that nobody seems to account for. Next, if Hamilton or Alonso or Webber stop racing, life would go on, look at Shumacher. Wrong car, no performance, batteling way in the back, and nobody seems to care. Yet just a few years ago he was the star. What if Mercedes finds a second somewher, we would be seeing a totally different battle.
I LIKE MOTOR SPORTS BECAUSE THERE ARE NO HOOLIGANS - lets keep it that way. I am displeased when Ferrari dosent win, but if they do not deserve to win then they have to be second. WORK HARDER, GO FASTER, BE MORE PROFESSIONAL, MAKE LESS MISTAKES - and of course take your hat of to the winner, because he deservs it even if the team and the driver are not your favorite.

If you dont mind me saying, you seem to be in the latter `camp`(No pun intended!) when it comes to slagging Hammy off....so you are biased too eh?
As regards the race it was a procession, with the usual suspects 1-2-3.....erham.....with of course `Crimper Jenson` being only too happy to....erham.....`bring up the rear`....again....no pun intended?

  12. I think on the (Heated) debate on who is best....Alonso v Hammy.....Alonso is in his prime as a driver, where Hammy hasn`t got there yet....Hammy is just as fast and just as lethal on the charge, but Alonso has the edge still on going for the throat with single-minded determination to win, cool as they come with skill and speed to burn....great pity they didn`t gel when at Mac together....what a team that would have been...trouble is you cant have two `winners` in the same team...one has to be happy to play second fiddle ie JB, Massa, Petrov....when you have got two wanting to be no1 you end up with what they had at RB a few races ago!
Hammy`s time will come.....its been quite a while since Mac had a couple of seasons with a totally dominant car....when they do, and it will come.....Hammy will clean up, no matter who his co-driver is!
As regards Vettel....the writing was on the wall earlier in the season when he admitted he eventually wanted to drive for Ferrari....no doubt after he saw what they were paying Alonso...as well as Kimi to sit on his Rs. Vettel has his eyes set on a big pay day when Alonso calls it a day!

  13. Some spectacular driving by Kubica in a track where supposedly you can't overtake. it's true he had fresh rubber and his rivals didn;t, but still he had a few laps to remember. That guy had some bright days ahead of him.

  14. michaelryan, the problem is not only did you give your opinion, but you said all the rest of us have to "be honest" with ourselves and admit that Hamilton is the best. Now let me put the shoe on the other foot. Michaelryan, I want you to be honest with yourself and say that Kimi Raikkonen is the purest, most naturally talented, and fastest driver in the history of F1. That is my opinion, but here I am forcing it on you. How do you like it?

  15. Amazing drive by Alonso showing us why hes a double world champion and a fantastic driver. I am not a Lewis Hamilton fan.....far from it but fair play to him for trying to overtake Webber. I'm rooting for (and have been since the start of the season) Alonso to win the championship and thats now looking more in sight!

    What are you on about?
Have you not read my post and what it relates too?So what if I think that Hamilton is the best driver in formula 1?
Everybody has opinions on it.Some think Alonso, some think Hamilton, some think other people.
That is not what my post was talking about. What I was saying which is pretty clear was that some people on these forums dismiss and ridicule other peoples opinions without posting one of their own.
So can you tell me whose opinion I put down?I never got one from the person who put down mine. And opinions are there so other people can put them down. This is not what I'm arguing. What I'm arguing is that if someone decides to put down an opinion of someone else's they should at least offer one of their own.I think this was stated quite plainly.
But i cant allow for people who lack a certain level of intelligence to realise this.Do you understand now?
And you call me a DUMBFUC K?????You thick C-nt!!

  18. After watching the GP, I think that the chicanes should be removed for the next race. The Singapore Circuit has more than enough tight corners, but removing the one just before the straight would make it more interesting. You know, the drivers can get up to 300 kmh but then they have to literally stand on the brakes to slow down by almost 200 kmh for the next corner.

    From R, on Mon 27 Sep 19:19
  19. Hamilton simply tried his usual trick of forcing his way through a gap that wasn't there this time against a driver who wasn't going to give way to him, and came unstuck, with Mark Webber racing off leaving Hamilton to spit his dummy or rather throw his steering wheel from his car onto the track having wrenched it from its fitting. You see he's used to getting his own way! Meantime both Alonso and Vettel drove extremely well and made the race really exciting whereas if I was Alonso I shouldn't count on Massa as a partner for the Manufacturers Race as he seems to be doing everything he can to come last. The track at Singapore seems to be little more than a glorified Go-Kart Track.

  20. Kubica's Overtaking was Incerdible. Terrible setback for Lewis. Ferando up there with Webber now and looking like a posible champ this year. Vettel really close but out of race now for Champion. Double podium for RedBull, McLaren again relies on Button for points. RedBull have it but Mark and Ferando or Lewis could win
