Premier League - McCarthy levels late for Blackburn

Substitute Benni McCarthy scored a stoppage-time equaliser as a dominant Blackburn Rovers could only earn a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough at Ewood Park.

Afonso Alves looked to have made Blackburn pay for a lack of cutting edge with a 74th-minute goal completely against the run of play.

McCarthy came off the bench to spare the home side with a 93rd-minute header - although Rovers' relief will be tempered by the realisation that they had the possession and territory to merit all three points.

The match started very brightly with Jeremie Aliadiere smashing an eighth-minute volley against the crossbar as the Blackburn defence appealed for offside against the inactive Alves.

Roque Santa Cruz - returning after injury - almost made the breakthrough in the 16th minute when he was put through by Stephen Warnock but his left-foot shot beat the dive of Ross Turnbull and rebounded back off the far post.

But despite the home side increasingly taking control, Boro came within an errant offside flag of opening the scoring on 23 minutes when Tuncay flicked an overhead kick past Paul Robinson after timing his run through the defenders as they pushed out following a half-clearance.

Six minutes later, Turnbull did well to parry Santa Cruz's powerful header from Carlos Villanueva's corner, with the keeper again denying the Paraguayan just before the break with a brave dive at his feet as the striker slid in to turn a through-ball goalwards.

The home side continued to dominate the possession and territory after the restart, but failed to carve out any real openings to test Turnbull further and looked to be growing increasingly frustrated as the minutes ticked by.

Indeed, Alves came closest to opening the scoring when he cut in from the right wing and his deflected left-foot shot bounced inches past the far post and out for a corner.

And the Brazilian made sure his next effort counted, controlling a ball over the top before cutting past Andre Ooijer on to his right foot and burying his shot past Paul Robinson.

Blackburn huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser, but despite 15 minutes of pressure, failed to bring a save out of Turnbull.

That was, until three minutes into stoppage time when McCarthy found some space at the near post to flick Villanueva's corner beyond the Boro keeper to level with almost the last touch of the match.

  9. The Blackburn game was one of those where you just­ could not care who won, but it was a draw and you still­ could not care. On balance I prefer Boro as an outfit­ as Gareth S is more of a chippy chappy than the I am­ great Ince.
