Premier League - Redknapp replaces Ramos

Eurosport - Sun, 26 Oct 22:09:00 2008

Juande Ramos has been sacked as manager of Tottenham Hotspur and replaced by Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp.

First team coaches Gus Poyet and Marcos Alvarez and sporting director Damien Comolli have also left the club following Spurs' terrible start to the season in which they have picked up just two points from their opening eight league matches.

Pompey assistant manager Tony Adams and coach Joe Jordan remain at Fratton Park.

Spurs - who won their first trophy in nine years under Ramos when they beat Chelsea 2-1 in last season's Carling Cup final - stated that development squad coach Clive Allen and youth team manager Alex Inglethorpe will take charge for Sunday's league match against Bolton.

Redknapp said he was reluctant to leave the club where he won the FA Cup last season - his first major trophy as a manager - but added that he could not resist the chance to manage one with greater potential, while the compensation deal for Pompey sweetened matters.

The 61-year-old said: "It's a great opportunity for me to manage a big club before I retire.

"Tottenham have come in and offered £5 million, which is good for the club (Portsmouth), if we're all being honest. It worked out okay for everybody.

"I think the club in all honesty needed the money - things are tight.

"They (Tottenham) have a decent squad on paper, although it's not a well-balanced squad, it's a squad with good ability, very skilful players - but maybe a bit of a soft centre.

"We need a little bit more strength and aggression about the team if we're going to survive. You don't pick up two points if you're that good."

The former West Ham and Southampton manager announced he will be at Sunday's match to meet the players.

Tottenham face Bolton at White Hart Lane on Sunday and should Ramos - appointed following his back-to-back UEFA Cup title wins with Sevilla for a salary of around £4.5m a year - have presided over one more defeat then he would have become the worst manager in the club's history in terms of his average points accrued per game.

Spurs then face local rivals Arsenal on Wednesday and high-flying Liverpool next Saturday.

Ramos and his staff have been ditched exactly a year after previous boss Martin Jol found out he would be axed during the 2-1 home UEFA Cup defeat at the hands of Getafe.

Jol had a 41.5 per cent win rate as Tottenham manager - the fifth highest in the club's history.

Despite selling high-scoring strike duo Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov - to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively - the Tottenham hierarchy failed to sufficiently replenish their attack, with Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko the only permanent offensive signing in the summer transfer window as they held out until deadline day for more money from the Berbatov deal with the Premier League champions.

The Bulgarian eventually left for a fee of £30.75m, which would have been a British record were it not for the last-minute signing of Robinho by Manchester City's new owners.

Comolli spent big money on highly-rated midfielders Luka Modric (£16.5m), David Bentley (£15m) and Giovani dos Santos (£4.7m), versatile defender Vedran Corluka (£8.5m) and goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes (£7.8m), but none of them have so far managed to perform effectively for their new club.

Ramos's final record in all competitions at Spurs stands at 21 wins, 16 draws and 17 defeats. Just five of those wins have come since winning the Carling Cup triumph in February.

  2. Damn! I forgot my inane comment.

Well... Redknapp probably has a smaller penis than Ramos, otherwise I can't really see how his appointment will benefit the lads in the dressing room.

  5. About time they the board of directors sacked him because juande staying any longer would be a disaster infact he shoulda gone from 3weeks ago, yes he won carling cup but lost the plot from then because spurs lost far too many games after the carling cup and from the cups victory they turned to clowns winning only pre seasons again and going back to same loosing streaks from after beating chelsea infact he lost us the eufa championship by firlding the wrong team

  8. Harry's everyone's favorite. You lot at Pompey should remember that he left and came back. He loves the club, but look at the swag he's been offered. I reckon Harry cut a deal that benfits himself, Pompey and Spurs in the long run. Good on ya Harry. I think either Joe or Tony would be a good manager for Pompey. IMHO it is tough to leave 5millions alone.

  10. I'm a pompey supporter. Gutted Harry's left, but not really surprised considering the scale of the offer on the table. Not surprised, but a bit pissed off that he made comments devoted to the club which were not really meant. If you don't mean it, dont say it! I can't complain about Harry for the job he has done, cause there is no doubt he is one of, if not the best manager we ever had, but dont use the club and feed us with @#$% to climb the managerial ladder. I forgave him when he came back from scumhampton and actually convinced myself it was a move out of spite (to the scum), but now I know better, now I know he cares for no-one but himself, which is fine, but dont tell us otherwise, cause we're not kunts! Anyway, think he is wsted on Tottenham, should definately be up for England!

  15. The problem with Harry's move to Spurs is that should the side be relegated from the Premiership or not vastly improve as the season goes on, he might regret his decision to move there in the first place. In his place, I would have stuck by Portsmouth as the team are doing not too bad at the moment. You can't just keep swapping clubs like you change your pants Harry. That displays a lack of character and loyalty to the general public so get prepared for a slagging off should you get the boot from Spurs. Maybe it's only a matter of time anyway.

    From sappercommando25, on Sun 26 Oct 7:34PM
  16. Well Harry you have left us again. how can 5million be good for the club when it has left us without a manager. i must say that was one hell of a shock, but we played well today against fulham so hopefully portsmouth can keep going without him. i think he will come running back after a few months myself, but thats twice hes left now. since he has said he could see himself at portsmouth till the end of his career just shows how disloyal he is. All the best at tottenham however, you guys wont go down, and best of luck harry.

  17. RAYDUCKY, You MUPPET!!! Redknapp did not pick SPURS team today, it was CLIVE ALLEN and youth team manager ALEX INGLETHORPED who were in charge of the team today. Tony Mabert / Eurosport gone through all the trouble to write an article above, why don't read it FIRST. DON'T GO ARSE ABOUT FACE.
