Kieran Richardson fired a stunning winner as Sunderland beat Newcastle 2-1 in a typically combustible Wear-Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light.
The midfielder crashed home a free-kick with 15 minutes remaining to secure local bragging rights for the Black Cats after Shola Ameobi had cancelled out Djibril Cisse's opener in the first half.
The win pushed Sunderland into the top half of the table in ninth position while Newcastle remained second bottom after suffering their first defeat under the stewardship of interim manager Joe Kinnear.
To add to the already electric atmosphere on Wearside, Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton came on as a late substitute to make his first appearance since completing a six-game ban.
The midfielder was greeted with a cacophony of jeers from home fans but it was Richardson who made the headlines - and the difference - with a superbly taken free-kick from the edge of the penalty area.
After his misfortune last weekend - when he saw one free-kick hit the post three times and another disallowed - it was perhaps fitting that it was Richardson who netted the winner, a bullet into the roof of the net that Shay Given could do nothing about.
The hosts, roared on by a crowd as partisan as it was boisterous, had started brightly in blustery conditions on Wearside which saw the wind play havoc with long balls on more than one occasion.
And Roy Keane's side made their early supremacy in terms of possession count after 20 minutes when Cisse slid in at the far post to stab Steed Malbranque's cross-shot past Given.
The Stadium of Light, packed with nearly 45,000 locals, duly erupted but credit to Newcastle, they were not in the mood to play the role of shrinking violets despite the hostile environment.
Indeed, the visitors showed their willingness to fight back straight away, Ameobi nearly levelling the scores with a well struck first-time volley just a minute after his side's defence had been breached.
Newcastle took heart from Ameobi's lead and Obafemi Martins had two quick-fire goalbound efforts blocked on 29 minutes before the England Under-21 hitman swooped to level the scores.
The Newcastle striker ended a lengthy barren patch with his first of the season in the 2-2 draw against Manchester City last weekend and as the Magpies began to get a foothold in the game he was soon on target again.
It came on the half-hour mark and with a firm header past Marton Fulop as Ameobi out-jumped his markers to meet a free-kick taken close to the goal-line.
But the Magpies' resurgence could not be sustained and after the break Sunderland reaffirmed their authority on the game, culminating in Richardson's super strike with 15 minutes remaining.
The goal knocked the wind out of Newcastle's sails and Sunderland could have added another as full-time approached, Kenwyne Jones - on as a substitute to make his first appearance since injuring his knee on international duty - heading over before Cisse went close with an ambitious first-time effort from a tight angle.
Cisse then struck the bar from the edge of the penalty area on 84 minutes but the Frenchman was not to rue his misfortune as time ran out for Newcastle and Sunderland registered a first home victory over their rivals for 28 years.

The result was expected. NUFC are playing really poor. Sunderland to be honest, were good, but not brilliant, they had times, when - if Owen had been fit/playing or the Toon had a prolific goalscorer - they were wide open at the back and would have conceded goals.
But as it is, the score was right, the Toon were lucky it was only 2-1.
Get Owen back, try to keep him fit, and who knows.NUFC should have kept hold of Milner for at least the end of the season.

Makes me laugh all the Sunderland fans gloating! You haven't beaten us at your place since 1980 something? I wouldn't be celebrating about that, you should be embarrassed!! You've a very long way to go yet boys!

Well said, but you can bet nothing will happen. probs won't even get mentioned on the news or in the national papers. What if it had been at St James no doubt the TV crew's would be camped outside yet again.
There is no doubt about it, Cameron W is totally correct in everything he says.
Newcastle definitely put out a reserve team as follows:-
Given (hardly any first team experience). Beye (an unknown). Colocinni (free transfer from Ashington workmen’s club). Taylor (normally sells the burgers but drafted in to help out). Bassong (totally no experience at top level). Geremi (an unknown from somewhere). Butt (once played for a minor team). Guthrie (on loan from Hilary’s blinds first Xi). Duff (highly inexperienced journeyman from somewhere down south). Martins (a former painter and decorator) and Ameobi (has only ever appeared as a substitute prior to this game). The whole team cost £8,99 but they did get 1000 nectar points.
Yes there are 29 games to go and it is without doubt that Newcastle will qualify for the Champions league.
Sunderland is not a proper city. Sunderland has a complete lack of desirable residential areas such as Walker, Byker, Cowgate, Benwell, Scotswood road, the West End and it certainly does not have a vibrant nightlife where thousands of fat drunkards and easy women stagger from pub to pub urinating in the street every night.
Newcastle is definitely globally recognised. It is a city of New South Wales in Australia and is also famous for it’s pottery as a major town in Staffordshire.
Keane has not signed his new contract yet. Clearly he is waiting for the board to appoint Dennis Wise so that he can be relieved of the responsibility of having to choose, himself, which players to buy and Cameron W is correct to point out that Sunderland cannot even buy their own players. The £50/60 million spent in the last couple of seasons went on grass seed as all the players have been signed on loan.
Finally, he is totally correct to point out that Sunderland fans should not celebrate a win such as this. Celebrating a win would seem very alien behaviour to Newcastle fans and they would have been very bewildered to witness such celebrations.
Once again the smaller of the two Tyne-wear derbies was marked by pitch invasions, inadequate crowd control and deficient stewarding. Will it again be ignored by the FA?
Hopelessly ineffective stewarding by old men and lassies - a sizeable number of who were celebrating themselves at the end - saw home fans taunt and tangle with the away following and also hurl bottles and coins at opposing players warming up.
No action seemed to be taken over the substitute incidents or the second goal celebrations when a gang of charvas were allowed to move down and goad the Newcastle dugout - presumably the same mob who were giving Roy Keane some stick recently.
The fourth official took away the bottle that hit Joey Barton and the returning midfielder also tried to hand a number of coins to stewards.
This has been allowed to go on for a number of years with all home derby goal celebrations followed by supporters entering the field of play - a criminal offence.
Surely it cannot be left unpunished any longer
Its a shame that they cannot spell
i will love it if we beat them LOVE IT
to kellz_86... gordon injured his ankle in training yesterday... and what is wrong with fulop... he is a much more consistent goalkeeper anyway......
this has been a long time coming but they finally done it well done lads lets keep up this giant killing consistency. now to do them on home turf that will hurt

great game today, i don't agree with everything said by both sets of supporters about the state of the toon teem they did show some good moves in the first half. it's sad the way things are going at newcastle all in sunderland feel sorry for you but it doesn't stop us LOL at the state youre in
I love football but in my declining years I do not go to games as the aggro is just too much, like on here. Shame on you all as you should want both teams from the North East to be up there, not to go down, but it will take time. Roy and Joe are not from you neck of the woods and probably could not give a monkey's as they will sell their souls to the highest bidder in due course. Enjoy your football like Hull are doing. What chance does the national team have in the World Cup when the nation is not together.
