Premier League - Paper Round: Dozy Altidore

Eurosport - Mon, 26 Oct 08:58:00 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson moaning about a ref, Portsmouth's finances in the spotlight and a Tweeting footballer are all in the Paper Round.

2009-2010 Hull City Jozy Altidore - 0

Ferguson moaning about a ref tends to come with the territory of a Manchester United defeat. Fergie said United should have had a penalty for a foul by Jamie Carragher on Michael Carrick and went on to say Carragher should have seen red for a foul on Michael Owen.

Wrong on both counts says former ref Graham Poll in his column in the Daily Mail. "When Michael Owen was pulled down by Jamie Carragher in the 87th minute, Andre Marriner had an easy decision: a direct free-kick and a yellow card. It could not be a red card.

"Carragher's challenge on Michael Carrick was good. His momentum took him through the midfielder but he came in from the side and got the ball."

Another week, another Portsmouth-in-financial-strife story. This week it is The Sun revealing that the strugglers have been handed a £15 million lifeline in the form of a loan to owner Ali Al-Faraj which will see the club through until the New Year - giving Al-Faraj breathing space to restructure the club's finances.

There were sighs of relief in and around South London at the weekend, as the Millwall versus Leeds game passed off with only minor trouble. However, Millwall have revealed that they will ban for life the grinning Lions fan pictured in The Sun wearing a Galatasaray shirt. Two Leeds fans were killed before a European game with Turkish side Galatasaray in 2000.

The Daily Mirror never shys away from transfer tales and it say Everton boss David Moyes has made a personal check on Middlesbrough's Adam Johnson.

The winger, who has been a shining light for the Teessiders this season, said: "I have been linked with massive, massive clubs since I was 18. When you get mentioned with these big, big clubs it boosts your confidence." Whether Johnson was responding to links with Everton is not clear!

The Daily Mirror's Mania column had its spies scouring Twitter and to be fair they have come up with a gem.

Hull striker Jozy Altidore posted on his page "felling like a champ". Shortly followed by "sorry I spelled it wrong, I texted that while driving". Not the most sensible thing to write, given the use of a mobile phone while at the wheel is a criminal offence!

This is the same Altidore who spilled the beans on his move to Hull via Twitter, and has been fined for revealing he was dropped for Saturday's game against Portsmouth for being late. It's fair to say Altidore is not the sharpest toll in the box. Sorry, spelled that wrong, typed it while performing open heart surgery.

Stan Collymore is never slow in putting his opinion forward and in his column in the Daily Mirror the big man has given his views on how he feels the Premier League should be run: No promotion or relegation and get rid of the likes of Bolton and Wigan. Classic stuff from Big Stan.

  4. It would be a welcome relief not hear a moan from MU every time that they lose. It is nearly always poor refereeing. never the Club's players fault. It cannot be their fault because they never do anything wrong!!!!!!

  9. sir alex is completely right...the ref was absolutley shocking on saturday... how can a player recieve 4 warnings before being booked?? (lucas) the carragher (rugby) tackle was a straight red.. he was the last defender and it was an obvious goal opportunity..owen would've buried that and carragher knew it... lol... when vidic walked over to him and said "if that was me i'd have been sent off"..then got sent off for turning his man... what a joke... i think this was revenge for fergies comments about the ref... point proven can we have a fair game now please??

  15. If Carragher got the ball when he tackled Carrick from the side, how come the ball continued on in the direction of Carrick's travel? If Carragher won the ball it would have carried on to the side.

  19. Stan Collymore is a convicted criminal. And should keep his opinion to himself. The premier league is only exciting to fans because of teams like Bolton,Wigan,Burnley,Fulham and others of that stature. As soon as you bring in franchise football then the game will then be a television product and not a sporting competition.Who wants that?
