Russian Dinara Safina has reclaimed first place in the WTA world rankings, edging back in front of Serena Williams on the eve of the season-ending Tour Championships in Doha.
Safina, who went to the top of the rankings in April but was overtaken by Williams earlier this month after an early exit in Beijing, will end the year as number one if she out-performs Williams this week.
With just 155 points separating the two players in the list published on Monday the destiny of the year-end number one ranking could not be closer, especially as hundreds of points are up for grabs in Doha, even for victories in the round-robin stage.
Williams, who has 11 grand slam titles to Safina's none, is looking to finish the year as the world's number one player for the first time since 2002.
Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, the surprise US Open finalist, reached a career-high fourth in the rankings.
Wozniacki's preparations for Doha have been overshadowed by a likely WTA investigation into her retirement from last week's tournament in Luxembourg where she quit against Anne Kremer with an injury while leading 7-5 5-0.
The 19-year-old, who injured herself at 3-0 in the second set, said afterwards that she retired to allow her opponent to play in the next round as she would have been unable to play another match.
WTA Championships Doha starts Tuesday 2pm LIVE on British Eurosport (Sky 410 / Virgin Media 521); Also available on your PC via the Eurosport Player - click on the link under the picture to subscribe.

Good to hear there are one or two sane people who blog here, annemacnaughtan. I agree that this site is sadly over-run with black supremacists who scream racism at the mere hint of a colour other than white.
Constructive criticism and irony are clearly concepts the majority of people who blog on this site have no grasp or comprehension of.
It's a shame for this site that a tool meant for use by tennis fans has been invaded with radical political views and deluded fundamentalists. I think I may well join you on the sidelines.
1 tantrum in I don't know how many years and the lady is pilloried, give it a rest, look at the many pluses not the one minus. She's the best like it or lump it. I lump it.

Amazing that there are so many comment on this subject. On one hand you have Serena who performs well at GS but not so at other tournaments. Then Dinara wins the small tournaments but flops in the GS. Although Dinara was runner up at Australian and French and semi at Wimbledon, it was the manner of those defeats, especially Wimbledon.
Some real sad and pathetic rascim going on.
Katerina you spend all of your time on this blog definding the fact that you are not Racist!! Why? Good for supporting Tsonga his mum is white so what is your point?
Not bashing you just don't understand why you seem to need to defend yourself so forcefully.
Clarence as far as I'm concerned Serena's attitude is fine she just made one judgement of error because she put herself under enormous pressure to defend her US title. She doesn't need to be like Arthur Ash she needs to be herself. Ton Jin K you are an idiot you are acting like a Monnkey so I suggest you get it off your back.
From a Black and Proud sister!! Booyaka!!
I just wish people would stop refering to this one lapse of judgement from Serena. She is a great role model for young and inspired young people.
Johnnie Mac was not a good example in his tennis days yet alot of people laughed off his behaviour and still do. I wonder why?
I will not trade insults with you annemcnaughtan, your puerile and bigoted views about andy murray are well known by those who follow the ATP debates. Your attempt at intellectual snobbery is as empty as it is delusional. There has never been any anecdotal evidence that you are even adequately educated, let alone the justification for the arrogance and false superiority you aim to project. Trust me if you had been fortunate enough to have graduated from higher education, you would be well capable of moving on from peddling bigotry and tittle tattle on the internet. It is bad enough that we have to strive to repel odious marauders from coming on here to shout obsceneties at some professional players, but it is just as repellent when home grown charlatans like yourself feels enobled by the similarities of the views you share with these people. Like I said to the other lady, get yourself a life and leave serena alone.
Annemcnaughtan
U are so pathetic and lame. U log and leave comments as Katherine and promote your comments as Annemcnaughtan.......what a loser!. You might as well send yourself flowers and claim your lover sent them to you.
Too many British sports fans are incredibly ignorant. Maybe it they had better players the nations's fans would be a little less judgemental.
Frederick A. when I said I had read it backwards and forwards you obviously are unaware of IRONY!!!!
For nnemcnaughtan, you can understand that I did not ask any proof from you, because it is not something you can deduce with a myopic eye - you don't have the right method of analysis. Just reading it backwards and forwards has no bearing with the point I was making. All the same, I don't want to dwell on that point
I think so far comment 46, gives the most concise and accurate take on this whole Serena/Safina issue, and put everyone elses in the shade. To be fair Serena isn't playing and a few years ago, she would have had enough in her tank to do what it takes to muscle away the No. 1 ranking from Safina. Safina has played poorly since the US Open, so its now more a case of Serena not having enough in the tank to make the No. 1 ranking her own. Serena's case is becoming increasing difficult to argue. I see-saw affair over the No. 1 ranking in the meantime. Serena will regain the No. 1 ranking after Doha, Safina re-emerges strongly after the winterbreak to regain the No. 1, possibly before the AO '10. But the turning point is when eventually Safina wins a slam. Serena's position will become even harder to defend if Safina regains the No. 1 in those circumstances. Most things have a beginning and end, and Serena is no different.
sanchez.santos I know I said I wouldn't write on this page again but who is Kathy W??????
Do you know about libel laws - I would be extremely careful what you accuse people of in future.
Sanchez Santos, I suggest you READ and UNDERSTAND what Katherine is trying to say, she is one of the few people on this blog to write about tennis in an unbiased way. Be aware of facts before you accuse people of holding views which are not their own. Nowhere in her post does she purport to hold the kinds of views you talk about, no doubt you lack the intellectual capacity to understand what you read. This post of yours only shows up yourself. Do not bother to reply, for I like her will no longer visit this website, I shall leave it to intellectual pygmies like yourself who are unable to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behaviour, between racism and objective commentary, if one were to pursue your line of reasoning your defence of Serena Williams attitudes and behaviour could carry the whiff of racism against those of other ethnic origins !
Katherine who do you think you are kidding? you are the same Kathy W who spent weeks on the message boards dancing to the tune of your fellow racist gang members and agreeing with everything they and the BNP activist Steve Arkwright wrote. Did you not also write that you were going to pass on a biased and heavily slanted post by Bobito (who writes sense most of the time except for when he writes about serena and drugs testing) to the USTA and the ITF so that they can understand how all 'true' tennis fans in europe want serena banned from the sport? It is against my upbringing to insult a 61 year old lady (as your profile indicates) but you really should give a rest on this serena issue. You should really get a life which allows you to move on without getting bogged down about serena williams. She is a preofessional tennis player, deal with that fact, its not the end of the world. You don't like it but who says everything in life should be to your taste. It seems the habitual serena stalker richmc23 hadn't heard of you before, so drag him to the message boards with you where yourself, chemical ali and bobito can party and serenade your common hatred of serena williams. most of the rest of us just want to enjoy the tennis and talk about matches without all the hatred stuff some of you are stuck on. Leave serena alone and go live your own life, simple. cheer dinara, lena, sveta, vika and everybody else you like and let the williams supporters cheer theirs. its no big deal.
I have only just started writing tennis comments but have decided that I won't do in future. Instead of some people commenting about the sport they are using it as a political forum. What happened to constructive criticism. If I denounced Dinara as an ill mannerd lout how many people would shout racist and bombard me with their small minded and infantile jottings, but as soon as I mention "saint" Serena in the negative I have suddenly become the world's public enemy no 1 and the biggest racist going. So sorry I have better things to do than comment on pages that clearly have nothing to do with tennis. To the people that use these pages for TENNIS comments I'm sorry I won't be joining you in discussing this brilliant sport but the pages have been taken over by bigotted and short sighted people who have no right to use these sports pages to accuse people of racism etc. Why don't they use the political pages instead. To all these small minded people have you ever heard of Arthur Ashe he won the US Open, the Australian Open and Wimbledon. He stood up for civil rights, went on marches and was even arrested at an anti-apartheid rally but he was a gentleman at all times. Serena could learn a thing or two from him and for those of you who have never heard of him (the majority of so called tennis fans on these comments I would think!) Look up his biography and try and learn how to persaude people racism is wrong. Name calling isn't going to help your cause you people are far more racist than me. I have friends from all races and religions and love them all. Hate never helps any cause, please tone down your language and use these pages to talk about the wonderful sport of tennis.
Frederick A, I have read Katherine's comments backwards and forwards, I'm afraid I cannot see your point. There is no racism, hatred or jealousy in her posts, unlike most of the drivel from Zita etc. Your attempt to cloak her posts in the psuedo intelligence of discourse analysis and judgmental rather than constructive criticism is a false premis. She shows no bias in her posts, it is your own interpretation that finds it and unless you can show the reason for this conclusion in your analysis of her post I find your argument unproven.
tong you raciest @#$%
Katherine and Richmc23 How refreshing to hear from people who do not mention race or creed when talking tennis. I have generally given up writing on this forum as the amount of abuse and general ignorance displayed by some people is disheartening for true tennis fans. I agree with you both in your posts, let's applaud great tennis whoever plays it, and condemn unsportsmanlike behaviour whenever it appears.
As I've said in free-online verse, females should play TABLE tennis, which puts far less stress on the racket/bat arm.
