Boss Kevin Blackwell has been told Sheffield United do not have the funds to buy their way out of their current injury crisis.
The squad has been hit by a catalogue of injuries and Blackwell has seen his promotion hopefuls slip from fourth in the table to 13th in the space of three weeks, with defender Andy Taylor, who sustained a thigh injury in Saturday's defeat to Cardiff, becoming the 10th first-team casualty.
Blackwell said: "There isn't the money there so I can't just go and get players but if the lads play as well as they did against Cardiff they will win more than they lose."
He added: "We have the smallest squad in the Championship and (chairman) Kevin McCabe is well aware of what we need because you can't build a team on loans. He's a first-rate chairman and is doing all he can to see us through this economic downturn.
"We are asking young squad players to fill some big, experienced boots because of our situation and to play so many at once wasn't something we could have envisaged.
"When we have a full complement of players I think we have a strong first XI and a real chance but the squad is very thin and we can't carry long-term injuries, suspensions or loss of form in anybody or we will be a mediocre team."

sheffield united have got there priorites wrong they would rater put money buying chinese hungarian and australian clubs instead of investing money in sheffield united it is the fans that make sheffield united the club they are not a pratt called mccabe get some guts sack blackwell and give the new manager financial backing before you lose the fans support
ched evans scores for wales not us why give him a kick up arse tell him we want the same commitment he gives to his or he will be dropped
i am sorry to say this but i hope united keep losing its the only way were going to get rid of useless blackwell it will be worth it in the end nobody wants you blakwell go youre a defeatist and youre a loser
blackwell out hes useless as a manager he cant motivate a team thats why leeds sacked him also luton remember the year when leeds puhed us all the way for automatic promotion we went up leeds lost in playoffs year after he got leeds relegated but he didnt stop there he got lutn relegated same year so bodes well for us get rid now before its to late mccabe should go to if he aint got the ambition anymore sell up and go if he had given money to spend when we were in premiere league we may have still been there
Totally agree about not caring about the fans. They have never had any ambition all the time I have been following them when Doc Pace was a lad. The writing was on the wall for Blackwell when they decided to sell Beattie. That showed what a lack of ambition the club had. His goals would have taken the Blades to promotion automatically. Now what do we have for £3 million - Ched Evans. Evans or Beattie?? I know who I would rather have. How can you replace a proven goalscorer with a kid who is still learning at the same price?? OK times are tough but the payments in the Premiership would have been enough to pay Beattie's wages. Is there nobody coming through from all these 'feeder' clubs with which the club has associations in varying degrees?? If not, why not? What is the purpose of having them if they are not providing opportunities for players from these clubs? As for playing 'football' I saw Utd do it once against Preston. Most other times you might as well sit on the roof of the stand since the ball is up there more times than it is on the ground. Blackwell should have gone after losing the play off final. I know that Bryan Robson had his detractors (and I was a major critic) but at least he was responsible for bringing some quality players to Bramall Lane. Who's next to have a go?? One thing's for sure it wont be tried and tested. Could be Speed??
If "squad" players are not good enough why are they here in the first place? The whole idea of a squad is to fill in for injuries. Most "squad" players should play their socks off to become first teamers. Looks very much like bad coaching. Anyone else noticed the gaping errors? Can our goalie save anything low and to his left? Sorry - lots of money came into the club via 1, season ticket sales, 2, selling our best players and 3, the west ham fiasco. McCabe should have no excuses for finances and Blackwell should have no excuses for bad coaching. The fans do not matter to the club, never have. Just money making business for already rich man. Utd do not deserve the decent fanbase they have. Remove McCabe and sack Blackwell.
Exactly what has happened to the West Ham (cheating) United compensation payment?
smalles t squad in the league, what is blackwell on about, i really want blackwell to do well, but it just isn't happening, if we are not back in the playoffs or very very close by christmas im sorry but you have to go, still just on your side at the moment but losing patience.
