Alex McLeish has revealed he left Rangers because of a lack of cash to spend on players.
McLeish - now manager of Birmingham - spent four-and-a-half years at the Ibrox helm and won all three domestic trophies before parting company with the club in 2006. He says showdown talks with then chairman Sir David Murray over funds for players proved to be the beginning of the end of his spell with the Glasgow giants.
Speaking in an interview to be shown on BBC ALBA on Saturday night, McLeish said: "At the end of my Rangers career, David and I had a man-to-man chat about it and I said something has to happen, either you give me funds and I continue or I go and the players get a new face, they probably need a change - something needs to change."
He added: "And because there wasn't the embarrassment of riches that perhaps there was in the past, we shook hands and I agreed to go, and it is a new chapter."
McLeish was succeeded by Paul Le Guen, who infamously lasted just 200 days before being replaced by Walter Smith.
Despite winning the SPL last season and securing Champions League football, Smith's only summer signing was Jerome Rothen on a season-long loan from Paris St Germain.
Speaking when quizzed about funds being made available to him in January, the Rangers boss said: "I don't want to get into that kind of aspect of the club at the present moment.
"I would rather just concentrate on the fact that we have to make sure what we've got at the present moment manages to get itself together enough to keep us going and concentrate on getting a better level of result.
"That's all we're hoping for at the moment."

The clowns at celtic don't seem to realise that this is affecting them big time aswell. Have they not been watching their club? oh, of course not 22,000 of you never showed up for a home European tie.
We are the Old Firm, what happens to one - financially - happens to the other. We are the greatest rivals on earth but we need each other! Doesn't it show with the so called football being played at your club. We can't, and won't invest in quality players unless we move out the spl. Both of us...
Ha ha ha the funniest thing I've heard this year. No wonder Murray is deserting the sinking ship.
4.Bearing in mind - ... " For every £5er you spend we will spend a £10er " ... LOL !!!
(Celtic F.C) - Hi is that the police, I would like to report a theft please officer.
(Police) - Sure no problem what seems to be missing ?
(Celtic F.C) - Its the biscuit tin officer, its just disappeared, sombody must have stole it !
(Police) - Ok no problem we will investigate.
News Flash-------------------- The Biscuit tin was later recovered from a small time buisness man by the name of Sir Dave Murray from the Ibrokes area of Glasgow, police raided the office at ibrokes park and found Mr Murray clutching the tin and mumbling somthing about a 13 Million transfer fee for some player by the name of Tore Andre Flo. Mr Murray is now being cared for by an elderly friend by the name of Walter Stiff and is said to be making good progress.
Cheer up guys - We are only having a LAFFERTY
i was listening to jon trynor's your call on saturday when smith sad, and i quote,"the banks are running the club". i think the financial problems at Mordor are far worse than anyone imagines. you have rangers effectively up for sale, no doubt at a bargain basement price and no one wants to buy them. big trouble indeed.
The smoke out of Ibrox isn't a fire sale of the players. Its an insurance job on the stadium to clear the debt.
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. David Murray for another knighthood
