Rafa relieved with win

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez admitted his relief after his side`s dismal run ended with a 2-0 win against reigning champions Manchester United.

The Reds had been subjected to brutal criticism before the game following four successive losses, their worst run in 22 years.

But Fernando Torres ensured a first win from five attempts by firing the opener and substitute David Ngog added a second in stoppage time after Nemanja Vidic and Javier Mascherano had both been sent off in a fierce confrontation between English football's bitterest rivals.

"I am very pleased for the club, the players and all the staff," Benitez said. "We needed to change our luck with a win, and this was a fantastic win.

"Beforehand we were talking that this was the perfect game to change our luck, against a good team.

"We needed to perform in front of our fans, and to show what we were capable of. It was a fantastic performance from our players."

  3. Liverpool better without Gerrard. Remember when Gerrard was rumoured to be leaving? (to chelsea a couple of years back?) Remember Rafa's silence on the subject - no pleas to stay, no emotional blackmail suggesting he was letting the fans down- THINK WHY. Rafa knows that Gerrard, for all his talent, has a habit to wander through games, searching the ball out and trying (to often) to play killer "hollywood" passes half the length of the pitch - in short he plays without discipline. Rafa is the most defensively minded of the top six or seven managers, and he doesnt like Gerrards attitude, it upsets his "gameplan"
