Reds must cash in on surprise win - Mascherano

Mon, 26 Oct 20:27:36 2009

Javier Mascherano demands that Liverpool must build on their shock victory over champions Manchester United - and not allow their standards to drop again.

The Reds went into Sunday's 2-0 home triumph over United, having lost four successive matches and knowing another defeat would mean their worst run of results since 1953. But Liverpool stormed to victory thanks to goals from Fernando Torres and David Ngog, lifting the pressure on manager Rafael Benitez.

Mascherano, who accepts he deserved to be sent off in the final frantic minutes, said: "We were talking about (kick)starting our season, and it was an important win."

He added: "It's good for the confidence. But we have to keep going; we have to look forward and not drop important points in the future.

"If we want these three points to be valuable we have to show this performance again in the future.

"Losing four games in a row was bad, so now it is time to start (our season) again."

The midfielder is heartened that Liverpool have demonstrated their credentials as feasible title contenders - but he warns it must be just the beginning if they are to sustain a challenge.

"Now we have shown can win, we cannot stop," he said.

"We must try to keep going like this. We have shown we are a good squad, not (just) a good team.

"Some said it's not that good a squad, so we have had to pull together. Now if we want to fight for something we have to play every game like we did against Manchester United."

  4. Dear Vegasmufc, do you really have to remind the mancunts that they lost to lowly club BURNLEY after they were soundly beaten at anfield? It was not a shock victory, mancunts were lucky in the past to get ref decisions go for them but not this time. From the way i see, mancunts wont survive another red army attack @ old trafford. you read it here first.

Cor blimey; Man United were rubbish, we just didn't get going, Liverpool looked the more hungry team. I suppose it' won't change much though, United will still win the league and liverpool will probably lose to fulham next week and eventually finish 7th, but respect to the Scousers they played well! Yak! yak! yak!

Every year we get the same Liverfool groundhog moment saying how United are on the way down because Robson/Schmeicel/Cantona/Stam/Beckam/Keane/Van-Nistelro y/Ronaldo is leaving and how the premier trophy is coming back to Scamfield, and every year, the wild imaginings are shown to be laughable as United replace skill with more skill and win again.
Have a look at the Scamfield records and see who holds the record for the most wins ... yes, it's United
We lose the odd game, just like the last 3 years, and all the insects crawl from under the stones saying how United are finished, yet we go on and win yet another title

  14. Ferdinard has promised to give Torres the piece of hair he yanked as Torres blasted past him and smoked Van der sar with a vicious shot.

  15. 'Shock victory' Wtf - it's not a shock victory at all, two top teams battling it out - anything can happen - everyone has a bad run during the season, hopefully LFC's is over now. Thought the lads played great with a lot of passion.

Lucas did well finally getting stuck in more - getting physical, Aurelio, Insua also impressive. Great to have the real Carra back and we've run out of plaudits for Fernando. The Centenery Stand was rockin! Best atmosphere in a long time!!!

  17. Vidic is uncomfortable against strikers which have good vision, a bit of trickery and loads of pace. Playing Vidic against Torres was a foolish decision.

  19. What was surprising about it? Liverpool hammered them twice last season and bookies had Liverpool as clear favourites to win on Sunday, and they are not wrong too often!
I said before the game that only a very foolish manager would pick Vidic to play against Torres, and what happened? Ferguson went and did it, and once again Vidic (and Ferdinand) was exposed as being like the proverbial carthorse in the Derby and once again virtually cost them the game. Ferguson played right into Benitez's hands with his naive tactics and idiotic team selection!
Vidic must see Torres in the nightmares he will be having for some time! "Boys against men" springs to mind regarding his match against Torres.

  20. Period. We just have to keep going for this match wasnt a surprised.I dont know why people are talking about it when ManU's failure to us is just something very usual to do.I knew we will do it and do it again.Im not so delighted.ManU is an acute club to us
