Serie A - Newcastle's Riise hopes take hit

Eurosport - Wed, 26 Nov 13:16:00 2008

Newcastle United's hopes of bringing in John Arne Riise on loan have been hit following the defender's return to the Roma side.

FOOTBALL 2008/09 Serie A Roma John Arne Riise - 0

Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear enquired about bringing Riise back to the Premier League in January, just four months after the 28-year-old moved to Serie A following his seven-year spell at Liverpool.

However, Riise's recall to Luciano Spalletti's starting line-up has damaged any hopes of Kinnear boosting his defence with the Norwegian.

Kinnear said: "John's name came up specifically because he's not been in their team and he's a good player. We made contact with their club and asked 'Is there any chance of a loan?' and that's as far as it's got at the moment.

"And what happened after I'd made the call? He's back in the team and playing well, which changes things. When you make the call you're always aware that things can change."

  1. if u ask a true magpies supporter i would say that the nufc has a poor midfield players.i mean no creativity not to mention(butt, barton, guthireetc, etc).most of the goal scored in our club is by strikers.so would say that to bring back the quality in nufc side i would say to swoop ibrahim affely from PSV eindoven.and the midfieder(number 7,i forgot his name)of marsille.all the geordies must have noticed it.

  2. If you ask me i would say that a win in this game is too essential because our loss to the bitter rivals sunderland is a big loss in about 27 years.so another derby loss means a big disgrace in this 2008/2009 campain .our value is lost.many other club supporters think us as a team that should be relegated.they forget until 2004 there used to be a
big five instead of big 4(arsenal,chelsea,man u,liverpool, nufc).so this humiliation to the toon army must be stopped after taking a win in the riverside stadium.
long time faithful supporter of the magpies.

  4. A great player, he would fit well in to the vast majority of premiership sides, think he would be better suited to the reebok, rather than St James Park, Only joking Newcastle fans, if u get him then good on you, hope u are still in the premiership next season, I really enjoy my weekend in Newcastle, when we play u at home.

  5. I always thought Riise was a decent player with a swift left foot, scored some cracking goals when he was at Liverpool. He's made a few mistakes (like all defenders do) but overall he's a good solid defender and if he goes to Newcastle on loan it would be a decent move, wonder if my club Man City have heard he's available (lol) we couls do with a decent left-back.

  6. He`s a good player and only 28 years old. So he had a few good years left in him.
Ohh well, let`s look inside the lucky-dip once again.
