Manchester United's 23-match unbeaten streak at home in the Champions League came to an end as they went down 1-0 to Besiktas at Old Trafford.
United, who needed only one point to win Group B with one match remaining, fell victim to a long-range bullet from Rodrigo Tello as the Turkish champions snapped their seven-year away losing run in the competition.
Last season's runners-up still need need a point away at Wolfsburg on December 8 if they are to finish top of the group, while Besiktas narrowly kept alive their hopes of earning a Europa League berth ahead of CSKA Moscow.
United made a blistering start to the match, swamping the Besiktas defence and enjoying a host of gilt-edged chances.
Rafael found Gabriel Obertan within two minutes of the start, with the Frenchman squaring a great chance to Federico Macheda, who just failed to get a touch.
Nemanja Vidic also missed a sitter, his header from an Anderson corner somehow spinning off at a right-angle to the goal despite the Serb having done all the hard work in losing Matteo Ferrari near the right post.
Macheda came closest for United in the 19th minute when he received the ball on the right wing before cutting back inside with a swagger and drilling a low shot just past the right post.
But it was Besiktas who made the most of their opportunities, with Tello unleashing a bullet after being allowed space and time in midfield.
The ball took a slight deflection off the shoulder of a back-tracking Rafael, just enough to wrong-foot Ben Foster, before curling into the back of the net on the left side of goal.
And the Turkish champions could have made it 2-0 just before the interval after a delightful spot of one-touch football between Ekrem Dag and Tello. The Chilean did well to hold up the ball in the right corner of the area before laying it off for Michael Fink, whose low shot narrowly dribbled past the right post to let United off the hook.
The hosts continued to enjoy the lion's share of possession after the interval and again crafted a number of great chances to get the point they needed to win the group.
But again those chances went begging as Besiktas' impressive defence held firm.
Two shots in as many minutes on the hour mark from Obertan should have seen United level as the Frenchman first sent the ball skidding past the right post from the left corner of the box before landing a header on top of the net from an inch-perfect Macheda pass.
Sir Alex Ferguson slowly began to introduce his more experienced bench from the 70th minute as Michael Owen, Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra all took to the field to help United push for the equaliser.
Evra had a decent penalty shout rejected in the 90th minute as he went down under the challenge of Ibrahim Kas. The Frenchman surged into the box right in front of referee Stephane Lannoy but went down perhaps a little easily.
Besiktas were lucky to escape as Kas clearly made no attempt to play the ball instead blocking Evra with an outstretched arm.
A frantic five minutes of extra time saw yet more drama.
Keeper Foster went up for a corner, causing all kinds of problems as Macheda met it with a brilliant header turned behind by the fingers of Rustu Recber before the visiting keeper again denied Wes Brown from the following set-piece.
Carrick took a punt on the stroke of full-time with a low shot from the edge of the area but Rustu, who just moments before had been booked for wasting time, was equal to the task and Besiktas held on for the win.

SAF just messed up the night for everyone. It is not completely a bad idea to try the younger players. What baffled me was that most of the boys played to the gallery. They were too individualistic. It reminded me of Nigerian players. Welbeck may not turn out to be a good player afterall unless he becomes less selfish with the ball. I continue to maintain that football is a team game and you have to take your chances when they come otherwise you will come back to regret it. I think SAF should learn to be less critical of officials because in England and Europe it is now becoming a taboo for Man U to get penalty decisions in their favour. All 50-50 decisions yesterday went against Man U. The players must be ready to play exceptionally well such that the twelfth man will find it impossible to help the opposing team. Man U must wake up.

Sir Alex is not such a fantastic tactician sometimes. He gambled before last summer's Champions League final and paid heavily for it. I don't see United beating Wolfsburg away. Last night's performance was just a load of rubbish. Save Vidic, Brown and Orbetan, the rest were also-rans. No depth;no quality.Who is Bestikas? This will be a trophyless season due to poor planning.
I read in 2 comments the exact way i feel about the besiktas defeat. Alex Fergy paid no respect to all of us who paid good money to support our favourite team and go home frustrated by not watching our first squad. Further more why did he chose to play the kids here in old trafford. He should have fielded his best eleven then after making certain of a win introduce the kids. Then again he could had made certain of first place then play them in Germany and if they lose there then we would have not lost the unbeaten record at old trafford
Man utd was romancing the ball, without having goalsense.Anyway Besiktas took thier chance. And itwas embarrasing for last year runners up lose to a team like besiktas at home ground.

Of course I appreciate how you feel;it's happened to me. Having been watching United since 1938-yes '38- I deplore how football has changed .But we're stuck with it-too many games, too much money, too many demands on players and managers. But I caught the disease way back and can't change now,so my response last night was seeing some of the fledgelings perform on the big stage and being glad that United have them. I watched that debut of the new Chelsea whizz kid last week and had the same gut feeling as when I first watched Michael Owen years ago for Liverpool. i.e here comes trouble for us. So ,on balance and hating ever to lose,3 points at Pompey,West Ham and Fulham will more than compensate for last night. Thanks for saying hi.
Besiktas is not a high quality European team. Remember that They lost 8-0 to Liverpool and 6-0 to Leeds in CL in the past. The scenario would be the same if Sir Alex Ferguson had chosen the first line up. But this gamble of Fergoson's provided a remarkable chance for the Turkish champion and they deserved the win. Manu missed some important chances in the ext.time and Besiktas earned 3 important and vital points thanks to legandary Turkish national team captain and goalkeeper Rustu.

#158 - KEL. I am a ManUnited supporter but you know how I feel. It's just like spending your hard-earned good money on a first class air ticket and suddenly when you board the plane you realise that they have put you on an all economy class flight. I spent my money to watch the first team play otherwise I could have just gone to their training ground and watch the kids play. SAF should have declared that he is fielding his second team earlier so that people will not waste their money on the match. Pity I couldn't ask for my money back. Tactically he should have clinched the top spot last night and then may not even send a team to Wolfsburg for all I care. It's a gamble that could backfire and he only has himself to blame. Wolfsburg is a must win now to be top of the group.
FoeyP. Welcome to the Europa League.
Re 153 FoeyP It's really heartwarming to know that Liverpool's exit and early season collapse has got you to the point where you have the gall to be critical of any other teams. Suggest you try a large dose of Gaviscon to soak up the bile and bittreness.
What a whingeing lot some of our so-called "United -fans" have become; not to mention the envious and carping twits from other places. We have a manager who picks his team mindful of the big picture and other things concerning players about which we supporters know little. He decided to play a "weaker "team with Pompey,Spurs and the Xmas rush in mind. Good on him because I'd rather have 3 points and victory in all of thise matches than a win last night.
I watched the match in exasperation because we did more than enough to win ,but I felt far more encouraged at the end rather than disappointed because I saw at least 4 players who one day will be a thorn in the side for all those now criticising United. The future is bright-let's stop whingeing and be thankful-very very thankful. good on you Alex.
Man Utd played okay without ever really looking like scoring - there was not exactly an all out attack on the Besiktas goal - talk about youngsters but the Utd defence was hardly a collection of first timers in Vidic, Brown and Neville. Going forward there seemed to be no real pace, strength or imagination. Tell me if I'm wrong - thought Obertan looks interesting, and once settled could be a real danger. Then comes the old chestnut - who is going to score the goals?
United lose their long unbeaten run! buzzin : )
I SHALL BE SENDING OLD BLUE NOSE (FERGIE) A BIG BOX OF TURKISH DELIGHT
6 minutes extra time? I don't think so
This is the same team Liverpool beat 8-0 at Anfield?
Liverpool might be out but Utd won't be far behind
Well done Besiktas for putting these phoneys in their place
THAT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING!!!!! ALEX IS PAYING THE PRICE FOR MISSTREATING FOREINGS LIKE RONALDO, TEVEZ, NANI…you name it. Heheheheh
Oh yes:
how embarrassing was that,
'Attack, Attack, Attack, Attack, Attack!'
Dear me, i cringed when i heard the day-tripping, jolly boys singing that!!!
And where were the team colours, hardly anybody wearing them; EMBARRASSING!
