A host of Premier League clubs were in for Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh over the summer - and you can see why after a superb display against Juventus.
Team of the week
(4-4-2)
GK: Sebastien Frey (Fiorentina) - How has the Frenchman been overlooked by his country for so long? His performance against Lyon, including two great saves to foil Lisandro Lopez and Jean II Makoun, was decisive in helping Fiorentina go top of group E.
RB: Emmanuel Eboue (Arsenal) - What a difference a year makes, eh? Derided by his own fans, Eboue is now a changed player. Yes, he still goes down too easily but he was the driving force behind Arsenal and deserved a goal for his efforts.
CB: Gerard Pique (Barcelona) - The former Manchester United defender is maturing into a centre-back of the highest quality. He scored Barca's first and managed to keep former team-mate Samuel Eto'o quiet all night long.
CB: Michael Ciani (Bordeaux) - A clean sheet against a Juventus team which includes the attacking talents of Amauri, Alessandro Del Peiero and Diego is no mean feat. Yet that is exactly what Ciani helped keep as Les Girondins qualified as group winners.
LB: Artur Boka (Stuttgart) - The Ivorian put in a sterling performance at the back, while always posing a threat going forward. His arrowed crosses caused consternation in the Rangers' box on more than one occasion.
RM: Milos Krasic (CSKA Moscow) - It is mainly thanks to him that the Russian side turned over a 1-0 deficit against Wolfsburg in Moscow. An outstanding performance on the right side took in shots, meandering runs and, perhaps most notably, several precision passes to pick out team-mates in good positions.
CM: Alexander Hleb (Stuttgart) - The on-loan Barcelona winger showed his class against Rangers with a performance full of creativity and ingenuity. The former Arsenal man seems to be enjoying a new lease of life in Germany.
CM: Rodrigo Tello (Besiktas) - The Chilean midfielder's long-range blast proved to be the difference at Old Trafford - and ended Manchester United's 23-match unbeaten home run in the competiton.
LM: Simao (Atletico Madrid) - Skipper and saviour. His constant running and probing kept Atleti going and his goal could prove vital to his side's fortunes this season.
FW: Marouane Chamakh (Bordeaux) - The highly-rated striker was not even supposed to play against Juve, but he did and the Ligue1 side were treated to a special performance. So special that the notoriously hard-to-please L'Equipe newspaper gave him 9/10 in their ratings - the highest of any of this week's Champions League players.
FW: Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea) - The deadly Chelsea striker ended a mini goal drought with the winner in Porto - the second time he has single-handedly downed the Portuguese side.

And perhaps Chamakh would stay one year more if Bordeaux won their championship one year more...Sorry !
-- When I think that he would have played at Sunderland, it's frightened me --
barristerthomassmithchamber : LOL !!! Chamakh will never leave Bordeaux before June 2010. He's really happy to stay in this team and the Wenger will wait again. Unless MU or an Italian team want him...
arsene wenger had to move faster than other club if arsenal want to sign chamakh! lauren blanc was seen to be the next manager at old trafford! so where do you think chamakh will prefer to go?
Chamakh likes Arsene, Chamakh likes Arsenal, Wenger likes Chamakh.
Chamakh will soon be a Gunner.
Arsenal cannot afford Chamakh. He will go to either Man U, Man City or Chelski
Yip - Whats your point , he has been linked to English clubs, and the additional attention and his great form, has made him more prominent. Why do you find it necessary to label people stupid for discussing him, he is referred to in the article, and thus people are commenting on him?
Chamak is good to be a gunner come January to bolster our attack in the absence of Van de man pesie. Pls Prof Wenger get ASAP.

Todor, its obvious that u r a Barca fan, but stop making conclusions like who is the best, and who is not, cuz it just looks funny. I personally think that Sergio Ramos, is on the highest level as a RWB but i dont start writing, how Maicon looks funny and etc. because, as we can see, Maicon is the starter for Brazil, Ramos is the starter for Spain, and Alves is noone in his national team. They are all good players, and just because u have blue/red glasses, does not mean that all the best players come from Barca, and even if we look at the stadings...Barca one point behind...
simao played badly... he was lucky to score.
Todor T, shut up!
and to everyone going on about chamakh, you wouldnt even know who he was if hadnt been linked with so many english clubs. this happens so much with stupid people it hurts
1- Cuz Arsenal are going to get him for free in January.
I AM APPEALING TO WENGER TO BRING CHAMAKH TO EMIRATE STADUIM AND WE PROVE EVERYBODY WHAT WE ARE MEANT FOR BECAUSE WE NEED BOTH THE FOUR TITLE THIS YEAR. GAMBIAN FAN
and once again an article by someone who hadn't at least watched reports or consulted with anyone who wathed the games :D Pique did not defend against Eto'o, but D. Milito, Eto'o was "nullified" by Puyol. I watched 2 games last night - Barca and Chelsea and frankly would add Iniesta and Pedro in this team - Iniesta showed himself as a great playmaker in the absence of Messi and Pedro made the so called "best RWB in the world" - Maicon look silly, proving once again that the best RWB in the world is Daniel Alves! So, I would not put Anelka in there just for his goal, for the rest of the game his performance was "OK" and frankly Porto were a better team that night.
Everyone who's fan of Chammakh knows that he loves Arsenal and that he did all he could to join the team by clearly and publicly showing his unconditional readiness to come to England. I am glad to see him getting even stronger and making any manager that doubted his high rate skills feel a huge regret. Someone will be after him this summer for sure but what an irony! he will be free agent and that just means that he won't cost no one any penny...lol. I guess he took a huge risk by not extending and now is the pay off... I would want to see him still playing in Arsenal or MU because those are the teams that match his style. If he ever go to MU, Chammakh has the look and the size of ex-CR7/new CR9. Watch out, Marouane is coming on board soon
no xavi ??
Chamakh is coming to arsenal in january..take it for real, just because he's the only one that plays like Robin v. Persie..the boy love arsenal and he's coming,we at arsenal, we dont speak our mind like that for you our enemies.
