Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is set for a return to the Premier League - with Liverpool and not Arsenal as expected.

The Dutchman is out of favour at the Bernabeu and is expected to be allowed to leave in January.

Discreet enquiries had been made by Arsenal, but the former Manchester United ace is set to snub a move to the Emirates in favour of a loan deal at Anfield.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has been told he will have to fund his own transfer dealings this January, with Ryan Babel, Andriy Voronin and Andrea Dossena likely to leave, either permanently or, more likely, on loan in the New Year. (Daily Mirror)

In other big transfer news, David Villa has for the first time admitted he would like to play in England, putting both Chelsea and Manchester United on red alert.

The Valencia striker has always maintained that he would like to stay in Spain, but his failure to rule out a move to the Premier League will give hope to English clubs looking to snare the £40 million-rated striker.

Tottenham are eyeing up a swoop for unhappy Manchester City defender Micah Richards in the New Year.

Everton and Birmingham will battle it out for the signature of Nikola Zigic, Valencia's Serbian hitman. The giant striker is out of favour at the Mestalla and is available for a cut-price £6m. (The Sun)

Chelsea are set to beat West Ham to the signing of Livorno midfielder Antonio Candreva, who could fill the gap left by Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel's departure for the African Cup of Nations in January. (The Sun)

Both Blackburn and Burnley have joined the chase for Lincoln keeper Rob Birch. (The Sun)

And finally, Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is eyeing up a swoop for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Fran Yeste in January. The 29-year-old is out of contract next summer and is expected to reject the offer of a new deal over a wage dispute. (The Sun)
