London 2012 - Five thousand toilet brushes needed
As shopping lists go, the one compiled by the London 2012 Olympics organising committee for the furnishing and stocking of its newly-acquired Olympic Village is a lengthy one.
LOCOG were handed the keys for the 2,800 apartments on Friday and now have six months to fit them out before 16,000 athletes descend on an area of east London that has been transformed from a weed-strewn industrial wilderness into what will become a new trendy suburb of the capital.
In the coming months 16,000 beds will be delivered along with 9,000 wardrobes, 170,000 coat hangers 11,000 sofas and 5,000 toilet brushes.
Each apartment will also be equipped with a television and have wi-fi internet facilities.
Work began on the Village in June 2008 and as well as the residential blocks that will provide home from homes for the world's top sportsmen and women, the site will include a cinema, an Olympic Village Plaza, shops, parks and 24-hour dining facilities serving up 60,000 meals each day of the Games.
To handle what LOCOG describes as "the largest peacetime catering operation in the world" it will source 25,000 loaves of bread, 232 tonnes of potatoes, 330 tonnes of fruit and vegetables and 75,000 litres of milk.
Organisers have tapped into the knowledge of former British Olympic gold medallists such as triple jump world record holder Jonathan Edwards in the planning of the Village which LOCOG chief Sebastian Coe believes will be one of the best ever.
"Athletes are at the heart of the London 2012 Games and our plans for the Olympic Village will provide them with a home-from-home as they prepare for the biggest sporting moments of their lives," he said.
"With the Village now handed over we are starting the huge process to install essential facilities and services ready to welcome competitors around the world in six months."
After the Games the Village, which cost £1.1 billion of public funds to build, will form a new community known as East Village with half the homes designated for social housing. The other 1,439 dwellings have been sold off privately for £557 million to a consortium of UK developer Delancy and the Qatari Diar real estate company.
There will also be a range of community facilities including the Chobham Academy - a new education campus with places for 1,800 students which will open in 2013.

meanwhile our service men and women who risk their lives are treated appallingly, total disgrace. lets hope the games fail miserably.
an obscene waste of public money, benefiting only the rich scum. im sure there must be lots of people who would like to see the bog brushes shoved up seb coe and companys arses.
I am sick to death of people condemning these games...Not everything is about money!!! As a Nation we are going through hard times but we will get past it we always do...I am honoured to be British and do not want to be classed as a whingeing pom (as the aussies would say)..Our athletes have put in a lot of their time, energy and effort as well as their own money in reaching these games...(we do not have a lot of sponsorship like other nations).. Stop sitting in your little boxes and moaning about the money give some support and encouragement to our athletes who need our help. What about all the volunteers that are giving of themselves to something that is bigger than themselves...I applaud them too...If you dont like it dont watch it...but dont moan about something if you are not part of it.!!! I want to be honoured to be British at these games not ashamed...THE WHOLE WORLD will be watching....
Biggest catering operation in peace time????? Having a laugh. Obviously never worked on oil and gas projects.
AM I BOTHERED IT IS JUST MP'S WASTING MORE OF OUR MONEY
Loving all the comments. I agree with an earlier comment I was going to make myself about social housing. Over a billion pounds of our money to give away half to the scrounging jobless, drunken druggie law breaking imigrant and white people who just can't be bothered to get a job and at least try and better themseves. Olympic village. More like Obese scroungers village! I for one will not have any news sport or even read a paper for the 3 boring as hell worthless weeks this farce of a show will be on.
'After the Games the Village, which cost £1.1 billion of public funds to build, will form a new community known as East Village with half the homes designated for social housing.'
So that means then that within a year of the games finishing, the Village will become a crime riddled, drug dealing, child benefit scrounging, immigrant infested,work-shy shitehole..........................what a legacy aye?
Tell Seb to grow up. If this is news, and so important to to put on the web, then he could do with another job. Because the job he is so called doing ins't working.
Just thought of a fab new olympic sport with regard to the headline! Let's see how many bog-brushes Seb can shove up his ar5e!!!! I'd buy a ticket for that (oops, i forgot! I'm not a low-life African dictator (Mugabe) or a big foreign corporation, so no chance of a ticket there!!!).
the country is in a mess and this is all they can worry about, get a life and look around you and see what is going on
you are all out to line your own pockets
frankly ime sick to death of the olympics already with the rediculous "countdown" to the "big day" who gives a fiddlers fart how many toilet brushes it takes to scrub athletes skid marks off the u bend? send in the synchronised swimmers to do the "job", its could be turned into a new event.
All I've read are totally negative comments. The Olympic Games is going to generate a tremendous amount of income from the people visiting England for the Games. That is the whole point of the money spent so far. Why don't you all wait and see how much money comes in from the Games before you comment on the waste of money because I think you will be surprised and proved to be very very wrong.
No wonder the country is struggling with all of negative whinging comments on here. The olympics is happening so get with the programme and get over it.
total waste of tax payer money, we shouldnt even have the olympics.
i dont care how fast people can run or how far they can throw various shaped objects. i thought politicians were public servants we need to get this sorted. NO to the olympics NO to public sector cut backs NO to bankers bonus the list goes on. time for a revolution me thinks.
And when the games are finished, will anyone check that all the furnishings are still in the apartments and not been stolen by the athletes or voluntary staff ?....................No...........didn`t think so !
I am sure they will get a good deal from a Chinese company, they keep spouting, it is good for the WHOLE country, then why has the contract for the cars gone to BMW. when most of these are made outside of this country. Tax payers from the whole of the country subsidising London!!!!
Coe & co set of corrupt people!
24 billion pounds, when all people are interested in is the 100m final.
shame i services men and women dont get look after like the people going to the Olympic Village
And the pratts in power wonder why we evade/avoid paying tax and work 'cash in hand' - absolute waste of our money and disgrace.
