Six Nations - Veteran Jones called up for Wales

Fri, 27 Jan 11:22:00 2012

Wales have called veteran fly-half Stephen Jones into their RBS 6 Nations training squad.

Stephen Jones, Wales, November 13 2010 - 0

The 34-year-old, who has won a record 104 caps for his country, was left out of coach Warren Gatland's original 35-man selection for this week's training camp in Gdansk, Poland.

But with first-choice fly-half Rhys Priestland (knee) struggling to be fit for Wales' tournament opener against Ireland in Dublin on February 5, and Perpignan's James Hook having to return to his club for their Top 14 fixture this weekend, the decision has been taken to call Scarlets playmaker Jones up as training cover.

A Welsh Rugby Union statement said: "Wales have called Stephen Jones out to their RBS 6 Nations training camp in Poland.

"Jones provides extra training cover in the fly-half position and is available for full training from today (Friday)."

Hook is likely to be handed the starting role should Priestland fail to prove his fitness for the Aviva Stadium clash, which would potentially leave Jones in line for a spot among the replacements.

Gavin Henson is the other outside-half option in Gatland's squad, but he has not featured at number 10 in his three appearances to date for the Cardiff Blues.

Wales will be without prop Gethin Jenkins for part of the Six Nations after he was ruled out for five weeks with a knee injury, while centre Jamie Roberts (knee) and flanker Dan Lydiate (ankle) are fitness doubts for the Ireland fixture.

  2. Hey Wayne Rooneys Pig, I forgot about you, not surprising really as you are yet again another alias of Pink Pig, Edward Walters , Peter C, Anne, David Peter, richardcollins 66 etc etc etc etc ad nauseam. , and everything you say is not worth even a three year old bothering with. Get back on your ladyboy or netball forums, you clearly have zero knowledge of rugby!!!! whwhwoohohohhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, loving life yayyyyyyyy!!!

  4. While I think every Welsh person wants Wales to win, and to do well for the whole of the tournament, I wonder if we will win enough ball to get the best out of our exiting three quarters. The loss of Luke Charteris and Alun Wyn Jones will, I believe, be significant at the end of the day. We may have an outstanding defensive structure but it is difficult to win by only defending.

Comment 10 actually ireland beat us in ireland not at twickenham last time out and beat us well I might add. I think the addition of jones , will help the other teams more than wales , true experience is invaluable but good servant he was I think the legs just don,t have it enough at this level. Wales have better options in his position, especially when you look at the players that will take the field for england . All young and and nearly all play together in the premiership for the top teams, true they could fail badly but if they click they could blow the rest away. Ireland ageing but still dangerous , cant see the French or for that matter scotland who i think will be dark horse,s .( hinges on their first game) being easy . And italy who always seem to beat one of the home nations. Oh terry nice to see that for once you are talking some sense, even if you are a C..t

  17. blues fan , i do you think Tovey should be given the chance maybe against italy to start him off but that is gatlands chioce , ,Steven Jones is 34 and wales need to move forward and not backwards ,I also like this Steffan Jones Dragons because at the moment no other welsh man can match his kicking ability in wales scoring over 300 points to be second top points scorer in the 2010/11 Premiership season , but is he ready for international rugby why not try him out he plays in so many positions and at 21 he is looking very promising , and i agree with the comment that Mathew Morgan needs another season but i would say two seasons to mature and bulk his self up a bit ,I know hook can produce some times , and he runs hot and cold more cold lately but he has lost wales so many games in the past with his bad passing and pathetic kicking i for one have no faith in him any more, but it does depend which hook turns up on the day .but i still think all in all we have not got that bad a squad and it is all about building a squad for the next world cup , and of course winning this tournament .
