Bullen 'gutted' to leave Wednesday

Wed 27 Feb, 07:00 PM

Captain Lee Bullen has admitted he will be "gutted to leave" after Sheffield Wednesday decided not to renew his deal at the end of the season.Boss Brian Laws told Bullen his services are likely to no longer be required when his current contract at Hillsborough expires at the end of the campaign but the 36-year-old admitted he will be battling to reverse that decision.

"It was actually back in January, I went to see the manager just to get a feel for his thoughts on my future and he basically told me that in his opinion, we would be looking in a different direction and I have total respect for him for letting me know," Bullen told the club's official website.

"He gave me a fantastic opportunity to leave the club on a high with plenty of time to sort out a future elsewhere and help keep Wednesday in the Championship.

"I would love to get another contract, I'll be gutted to leave the club but the manager has made his decision and although I'm obviously disappointed, I have full respect for the manager and that decision.

"I've always signed one-year deals while I've been here - partly through my own choice because it's always kept me on my toes - and as the years go by you wonder 'will there be another contract?' I've had to prove myself year on year and I've taken a heck of a lot of satisfaction from doing that."
