Davey: Tykes were unlucky

Wed 27 Feb, 07:45 AM

Barnsley boss Simon Davey pointed to difficult playing conditions after his side were held to a frustrating goalless draw at home to QPR.The Tykes, heroes in the FA Cup, have now gone three Championship games without a win after being frustrated at blustery Oakwell.

Davey said: "I think people have got to appreciate that conditions were poor. The wind was swerving round and lots of passes went astray.

"We've got a point but possibly with the chances we had we were disappointed that we didn't take all three.

"As well as missing some good chances we also had a couple of penalty shouts turned down. It's just unfortunate that we didn't get that elusive goal."

QPR manager Luigi De Canio felt his side could have sneaked a win.

He said: "Possibly we had the better chances coming up to the second period of the game. For large parts of the game we commanded the play.

"They had a good early chance and a couple of times on the counter-attack they were quite dangerous but they looked very much like they were playing away from home."

De Canio dismissed Barnsley's claims that they should have had a couple of penalties.

"If those were penalty kicks we should have had about three again by now. He (Fitz Hall) definitely got the ball."

Barnsley dominated in the first half and could easily have gone into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Istvan Ferenczi was presented with an open goal in the sixth minute after Rangers keeper Lee Camp dropped the ball. But the Hungarian striker dallied, allowing Hall to get back and intercept.

Ferenczi wasted another golden opportunity when he got on the end of a pinpoint cross from Jamal Campbell-Ryce, only to put his free header wide.

Brian Howard also tested Camp with a low shot and Jon Macken had an effort blocked.

Rangers, who could only muster a couple of off-target long-range efforts before the interval, made a bright start to the second half.

Barnsley keeper Luke Steele was forced to parry a shot from Martin Rowlands with Dexter Blackstock putting the loose ball wide.

Rowlands also had another shot on target while Blackstock headed wide from Damien Delaney's cross.

Barnsley substitute Diego Leon went close to opening the scoring within minutes of joining the action, firing in a free-kick which was touched over the bar by Camp.

Leon threatened again, side-stepping a defender in the area before shooting just off target.

Barnsley had a strong penalty appeal turned down a minute from time when Hall appeared to foul Macken inside the area. An appeal for handball was also waved away.

Barnsley's Dennis Souza also put a header over the bar.
