Shearer 'optimistic' for Capello reign

Wed 27 Feb, 07:00 PM

Alan Shearer has every faith in Fabio Capello - but if he fails to deliver then England must admit that their players are just not good enough.Capello has been appointed as boss after the disastrous reign of Steve McClaren when England failed to qualify for this summer's European Championship.

Reaching the 2010 World Cup is now the aim, and former striker Shearer is confident Capello is the right man to take England to the tournament in South Africa.

"I am optimistic," said Shearer, at the launch of Umbro's "Bring It On" fans' survey. "When you look at his CV, they don't come much better than that.

"If he doesn't bring success to England than probably the players aren't as good as we think they are.

"I still believe they are good players and I still believe they will go on to be successful. He's the man to lead us to do that.

"I was injured for a lot it when we missed going to America in 1994. Qualification is the key - get there and you have a chance."

Shearer believes Michael Owen still has a part to play in qualification despite being left on the sidelines for Capello's first match, against Switzerland.

"It affects people in different ways, every top player will have had a setback in their career and it's how they come back - Michael will get back and score goals, I'm sure of it," Shearer said.

Shearer, who scored 30 goals for England, also feels that in Wayne Rooney there is a player who can win any match.

"I love watching him because he's value for money, the type of player you would pay to watch," he added.

"When you play for a great team at Manchester United it's great to watch."
