Zemmama: Fletcher is the real deal

Wed 27 Feb, 08:15 AM

Hibernian midfielder Merouane Zemmama believes team-mate Steven Fletcher is ready for a full international call-up.Fletcher netted his 13th goal of an injury-interrupted season in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Inverness and his impressive form has led him to be linked with what would be a dream move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The 20-year-old appears to be thriving on the immediate understanding he has struck up with strike partner Colin Nish and has been mentioned by national team boss George Burley as a young player being considered one for the future.

Zemmama, who is keen to see fellow Moroccan Abdessalam Benjelloun restored to fitness to give Hibs yet more striking options, insists Fletcher could make the step up from his current place in the Scotland Under-21 side.

The Moroccan said: "Fletcher and Nish are good, they move all the time. Fletch is more technical, with more running, and Nish is also good, he keeps the ball well and can score goals as well.

"I hope Benji will also be back for the Celtic game on Saturday and we will have a good attacking team. He would give us more goals and more points.

"Fletcher is a very good player, he has scored 13 goals so far and he is doing well with the under-21s so he has a good future with Scotland.

"I hope he can play now, why not? Maybe he can get into the squad and get a chance as a substitute."

Zemmama was instrumental in Saturday's victory over Inverness, his side's third straight win in the Scottish Premier League.

However, he admits he and his team-mates are not expecting to get it all their own way when they travel to face Falkirk on Wednesday evening.

Hibs currently sit one place above their opponents in fifth place and both games between the sides this term have ended in 1-1 draws.

Zemmama, who is hopeful of earning an international call-up of his own, added: "When we play Falkirk, there or here but there especially, it is always a hard game but if everyone does their best we will get three points.

"They keep the ball well, like they did against us here at Easter Road, and don't play long passes like other teams.

"We will work on our shape with the gaffer and hopefully we can start well and finish well."
