F3 convert to partner Colin Turkington in Team RAC BMWs.
Stephen Jelley's foray into the GP2 Asia Series could be his last single-seater action for a while after it was revealed that the former British F3 title contender has signed a deal to join Team RAC in the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship.
The 25-year old Englishman, who enjoyed his best-ever season in F3 to finish third overall in last year's standings, will partner RAC stalwart Colin Turkington at the BMW independent and will be expected to adapt quickly to the distinctive orange 320si as Team RAC chases its first outright crown.
"Drivers as talented, intelligent and as willing to learn as Stephen are few and far between," team principal - and former F3 guru - Dick Bennetts commented, "We believe this is a coup for Team RAC and I am looking forward to working with Stephen in the months ahead. With Colin set to build on an impressive 2007 there's no reason why Team RAC can't be serious outright contenders in 2008."
Jelley had looked set to pursue a single-seater career, although his options appeared somewhat limited after he failed to land a ride in the GP2 summer series. The outing with former champions ART Grand Prix in the inaugural Asia Series seemed to be an ideal platform from which to demonstrate his ability, but a steep learning curve and the shadow cast by F3 Euroseries champion team-mate Romain Grosjean has meant a difficult couple of rounds for the Briton.
Now, however, he has a new path to follow, and admits that he is delighted to have landed a leading seat in Britain's premier tin-top category.
"This was simply an opportunity too good to turn down," Jelley admitted, "I am very excited to be joining Team RAC in 2008 and am grateful for the chance to compete against some of the best drivers Britain has to offer.
"I intend to make the most of this opportunity and forge a good relationship with Colin and the rest of the team. I'll be doing my best to help Team RAC challenge for the championship."
