Paul Bolland gave Grimsby the advantage going into the second leg of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Area final as he scored the only goal of the game against Morecambe.
Bolland scored against the run of play in the 69th minute as he found himself free in the box as Morecambe were down to 10 men with centre-back Henry McStay off the field getting treatment for an injury.
Ironically, the Shrimps thought they had taken the lead seconds earlier when David Artell bundled home Garry Thompson's free-kick from close range but the referee spotted a handball and the goal was ruled out.
Morecambe produced the better chances throughout but Grimsby goalkeeper Phil Barnes made a string of superb saves to deny Matty Blinkhorn twice and Thompson, but Michael Twiss and Carl Baker were guilty of missing glorious chances.
