League One - 94th-minute goal nets punter £100,000

Eurosport - Sat, 27 Feb 10:17:00 2010

A winning goal hit deep into injury time turned a gambler's 50p bet into a staggering £101,540.44.

Oli Johnson of Norwich celebrates scoring his winner - 0

When Norwich's Oli Johnson (pictured) came off the bench to score two late goals in Tuesday's League One victory over Southend, the London-based gambler landed his 11-match accumulator after he predicted all of the night's League One results.

Yet the punter - who wished to remain anonymous - had looked on in dismay moments before as the final result of the night looked to have gone against him.

The Shrimpers were hanging on at 1-1 against the Canaries at Carrow Road, and it seemed certain that the match would finish in a draw.

That was until Johnson found the net four minutes into stoppage time to claim the points for Norwich - and bring home the 202,000-1 bet with William Hill.

"Our punter owes Johnson at least a bottle of champagne," said William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe.

  3. Well done and good luck to the punter, but beware William Hill only like
winners when it suits them for publicity reasons, the lucky man may now
have is betting capped or worse banned from their shops.
    Best regards Lucky Bob Pakastan.

  4. Millish, you are wrong in that assumption! When i was a trainee manager with Mecca Bookmakers(who later became Hills) i paid out a staggering £24,013 to a customer who had 9 dogs/horses accumalator plus trebles. He won £23,600 for a 20p acc. I was running the shop at the time and it meant that i was not made a manager until the next year as we had commission back then and the area manager didn't want a situation of me getting commission in a year when i wouldn't have if i had been a manager all year.

But that customer was back the very next day with his normal bet. He didn't know that he was close to the limit as he had evening bets in the accumalator and back then there was limit of £25,000. Large bookmaking chains are more than happy to pay out large amounts within limits as the publicity is vital to them. He was actually presented with the cheque by the area manager at the somewhat plusher shop nearby.

  6. A five pound note, on that bet, would give him more then a million pounds profit...you never know when you have the winning combination so you need to be lucky twice; first to get a good run like that and secound to have good money on that bet.Still it was a very good, and lucky, day for him particularly because of that very very late goal...

  14. Bookies have various limits on how much they will pay out on a single bet. I got a eight fold and nine fold a few weeks back, but it didn't pay much, as I only bet peanuts. To get so many scores correct, so this guy is very fortunate and well done for bashing the bookies! The buggers take enough money off punters, so spend it well. If I won that amount, I would give a small proportion to charity, but that is my own personal opinion. Let this lucky chap enjoy his well deserved winnings how it likes and if you are reading this - congratulations!
