Fairclough wants secure defence

Thu 27 Mar, 03:45 PM

Barnet manager Paul Fairclough has challenged his players to "tighten up" defensively as they prepare for the clash with struggling Wrexham. The Bees routed Lincoln 5-2 at Underhill last weekend but followed it up with an abject display in the 3-0 defeat at Macclesfield on Monday.

Fairclough said: "We have done a complete 180-degree turn. For most of the season we were relatively tight defensively and when we lost it was by an odd goal.

"Then last Saturday, for 65 minutes we annihilated a very good Lincoln side and went five goals in front. We got a little bit too big for our boots and took our foot off the pedal and conceded two goals.

"Consequently, we finished the game on a low and Lincoln on a high.

"Subsequently, on Monday Lincoln beat Hereford with only 10 men and we get thrashed at Macclesfield.

"For me the theory is simple: start strong, stay strong and finish even stronger. That will set you up nicely for the next game.

"The brain can't handle too many mood swings. So now that we have belief we can score, we need to tighten up once more as a defensive unit."
