Thu 27 Mar, 04:00 PM

Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson has made a double swoop for Manchester United midfielder Michael Barnes on loan and defender Martin Riley.Barnes is currently at United having made one first-team appearance for the Red Devils in the Carling Cup against Crewe and will join on loan until the end of the campaign.

"I believe he has been told that he won't be retained at United at the end of the season," Simpson told the club's official website.

"I've signed him on loan until the end of the season and if he is what we are looking for then we will look to try and do something with him in the summer."

Defender Riley progressed through the ranks at Wolves after joining them at the age of 13, but has joined the Shrews on non-contract terms after spending the last month training with them, as well as appearing for the reserves.

"I've seen enough that tells me I want to keep an eye on him and take a close look so we have signed him on non-contract forms until the end of the season," Simpson added.
