Swansea City have won the battle to sign Stockport County defender Ashley Williams on loan until the end of the season.Williams, who made his debut for Wales in Wednesday's friendly with Luxembourg, was also wanted by Championship club Cardiff City.
But the 23-year-old has opted to link up with League One leaders Swansea and his new boss Roberto Martinez is happy with the signing.
"I'm delighted to be able to sign a player with such potential as Ashley,'' Martinez told the club's official website.
"It's a huge bonus that he is a Welsh centre-half with international recognition."
Stockport boss Jim Gannon admits it would have been difficult for him to block Williams' chance to join a club at a higher level.
"I've had to think long and hard about this, but my overall feeling is towards the player," Gannon told Stockport's official website.
"I think he's missed out on a few other opportunities, but he's more than ready now for the next level.
"We're proud of what he's done for this club and we're delighted for him that an opportunity has arisen and that he's been able to take it."
