Premier League - Adebayor gun T-shirt sparks outcry

Eurosport - Sat, 27 Mar 11:19:00 2010

Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been criticised for wearing a T-shirt featuring a gun weeks after surviving the Togo team bus attack.

Emmanuel Adebayor - 0

Adebayor turned up at a 50 Cent gig in Manchester on Thursday sporting a dark grey shirt with a white pistol emblazoned across its front.

The Togo captain was unhurt in a machine gun attack perpetrated by Angolan rebels upon the bus carrying them to the African Cup of Nations in January, in which three people died.

They subsequently pulled out of the tournament, with Adebayor quoted as saying: "We've seen death. It's one of the worst things I have ever been through."

The Sun published comments from an onlooker at the concert criticising the player: "I was very shocked considering the Africa shooting. His fashion choice is tasteless. It's inappropriate for him to promote guns as 'cool'."

Adebayor, 26, joined City from Arsenal in the summer.

  3. Adebayor is just a self conceited character who think that the world revolves around him. It is not lost to many about the act he put up after the unfortunate attack on Togo National Footable Team. Simply,he does not have quality thinking skills and is leadership skills are weak as well. He could do a lot by humbling himself and concentrating on playing football without pursing limelight which does not bring the best out of him.

  4. David J - I'll show you places like that in Cambridge mate, it's not exclusive to the "gangsta" streets of the US, although I wish it was. Anyone who thinks it's cool will go out and find out for themselves that it isn't, and unfortunately nothing you can say can educate them into not trying it for themselves. Now there is plenty you can do to educate them, but you don't really seem like a man of action to me, it's easier to just say something on the internet isn't it? If those guided tours are real sign me up for one, I am very intrested to see what you have to show the "youf".

  5. Really? the dude was shot at, he gets the right to decide afterwards if he wants to wear a gun on his shirt, nobody else gets to choose for him. He had free will like the rest of us do you band wagon jumping tools.
koshmar2005 - First off I agree with your sentiment, secondly PLEASE do not confuse gangsta rap with hip hop mate, they are 2 different things and I for one enjoy hip hop, even though I agree gangsta rap is a load of old borrocks. Check out De la Soul, Lupe Fiasco, CeeLo Green (goodie mob), A tribe called Quest, The Pharcyde, Jeru the Damaja, outcast, The roots, Dilated peoples, Del the funky Homosapien, Slum Village, etc.

  11. For all of you who think the Gansta culture in the USA s "cool", come walk the streets of some of the neighborhoods. That will change your simple minds. It's not as cool as you think. Trash, stink, crime, and people who choose not to make a better life for them and their families.

  12. If you all think guns are cool, join the f~*king Forces. There you can have a gun and shoot at real people, trouble is they can shoot back.

I hate rap and hip-hop, if only for the alleged cool of guns and drugs. You pathetic morons, do you not realise that the retards in that sort of music these days are rich beyond belief from singing misogynist $h!t about beeatches, limosines, drugs and $hagging? Idiots like Fiddy Cent, P Diddy and Kanye West are the biggest @r$eholes in existence

  14. Of course he should not wear such a provocative image. What is he thinking? He's just another jackass who thinks guns are cool. He should be ashamed to promote himself to people, especially the young and impressionable, in this way. A high profile figure like him must inspire positive messages to young people (to offset his ludicrous salary) and this display of gun chic is truly sickening not to mention worrying. Perhaps he's too dumb to realise this.

  15. maybe arsenal fc promotes guns too.......... Can the sun and the so call on-looker or mind reader accuse arsenal of promoting guns all year round? go on to criticise Ade while you promote drug addicts and sex sirens in the name of celebrity world. shameless nuts

  17. What's wrong with you people!? Are you trying to predict what goes on in Adebayor's head? He could be wearing the T-shirt for any number of reasons. It doesn't mean he endorses guns violence. He could even be wearing such a T-shirt to promote some sort of anti-gun message...we don't know. Or more than likely, he could have been wearing that T-shirt simply because that's the general culture which surrounds 50 Cent music. Any "on-looker" who's at a 50 Cent gig must endorse gun culture themselves! So I have no idea how this "on-looker" can be complaining!

  19. Let him wear what he wants. What if he is reminding people of the dangers of the gun especially after surviving from gunshots? Who is fit to criticise what other people wear.....I find it very peurile!

From justpolitics, on Sun 28 Mar 6:14
  20. Dumbest article I have ever read. So what if he decided to sport a T with a gun on it? Find something better to write about as this is pathetic.
