Malpas sympathy for lowly Gills

Sun 27 Apr, 06:30 PM

Swindon manager Maurice Malpas sympathised with gutted Gillingham after his side denied them a vital win thanks to a late Hasney Aljofree goal. The Kent side had led after Garry Richards' first goal for the club on 57 seconds, but Aljofree popped up two minutes from time to break Gills' hearts, leaving them needing a win at Leeds to stand any chance of survival.

Malpas: "Nobody wants to be in Gillingham's position, but unfortunately over the course of the season someone has to be.

"We played poorly in the first half, but credit to the lads the way they dug in.

"We made a shocking start conceding a goal from a set-piece. That's been our Achilles heel all season.

"They had the bit between their teeth in the first half and we were never in it. But after half-time we rolled up our sleeves and started to play. We dug in and battled. That is what we need to do more often."
