Feyenoord Lift Cup

Sun 27 Apr, 11:09 PM

Feyenoord beat Roda JC for the second time in eight days to clinch the KNVB Beker and a place in the UEFA Cup on Sunday.

The Rotterdammers, playing on home turf at the De Kuip, headed into the match with a psychological advantage following their 3-0 win over Roda on the final day of the regular Eredivisie season last weekend.

And two first-half goals - from Denny Landzaat and Jonathan De Guzman - ensured the season ended on a high for Bert van Marwijk, whose team missed out on a Champions League play-off berth on goal difference.

Feyenoord were on their way as early as the eighth minute on Sunday when Tim De Cler nicked possession down the left and crossed for Luigi Bruins who in turn fed Landzaat. He made no mistake, lashing past Bram Castro and into the top-right corner.

Underdogs Roda then mustered a couple of chances of their own but could not level matters - Fatih Sonkaya's blast blocked by Luiz Andre Bahia and Cheikh Tiote firing wide.

Nine minutes before half-time, Van Marwijk's team went two up. De Guzman weaved his way through the Roda defence until he found himself one on one with Castro and slotted his shot coolly into the net.

Feyenoord sat back in the second half, seemingly satisfied with their two-goal cushion. But Roda appeared drained and lacked the cutting edge to get back in the game.

Tiote should have halved the deficit just before the hour mark but could only fire over the bar.

De Guzman almost made it 3-0 three minutes later but was denied by an excellent diving save from Castro.

But Feyenoord had already done enough to claim their 11th KNVB Beker crown in their centenary year and earn a ticket for next season's UEFA Cup.
