Murray targets number three slot

Britain's Andy Murray has set his sights on taking Novak Djokovic's number three slot in the world rankings at this week's Rome Masters.

Murray is currently fourth with 9,050 points, 110 behind the Serb, who is defending his title in the Italian capital.

"I'm a long way behind (world number two Roger) Federer. I need to win a lot of matches if I want to try and catch up to him," Murray said.

"I know this week I'm pretty sure (of taking the number three slot). Novak has to win the tournament to stay at three, I think.

"I'd be there if I didn't get penalised for withdrawing from one of the tournaments last year, when I didn't know what the rules were."

The Scot is looking to continue the recent progress he has made on clay, his least favourite surface, after he reached the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters this month before losing to world number one Rafael Nadal.

The 21-year-old, who has a bye to the second round in Rome along with the other top seeds, will face Juan Monaco after the Argentine qualifier beat German Nicolas Kiefer 6-2 6-3.

"He had a bad illness last year and before that he was ranked inside the top 20. He plays well," Murray said of Monaco.

"He got to the fourth round of the US Open a couple years ago and pushed Djokovic really close. He plays well on hard and on clay.

"But I'm feeling better on the clay this year than I was last."
