World number one Rafael Nadal powered to his fifth consecutive Barcelona Open title with a 6-2 7-5 win over Spanish compatriot David Ferrer.
Top seed Nadal, who also beat Ferrer in last year's final, exchanged early breaks with the fourth seed on the clay in the Catalan capital before racing into a 5-2 lead and taking the set with an ace.
Ferrer put up more of a fight in the second set as the pair broke each other twice but lost his serve again in the 11th game and Nadal sealed victory on his second match point when Ferrer sent a forehand long.
"This is much more than a dream for me," Nadal said after lifting the huge Conde de Godo trophy.
"I never could have imagined I'd be here winning for a fifth time," he added. "Congratulations to David. Even though it was not possible for him today he played a great tournament."
The 22-year-old Mallorcan has only lost four times on clay since 2005, most recently to fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero at last year's Rome Masters when he was not fully fit.
He became the first man to win five Monte Carlo Masters in a row last weekend and is favourite for a fifth straight French Open crown when the grand slam begins in Paris next month.
He also holds the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles and now heads to the Rome Masters where he will bid for a fourth triumph.

cameron please define personality?
What?.....Nadal defeated Ferrer?....Ferrer?
attaha, = One big total fruit cake..........lol
well done Nadal. #20, your mention of names like mcenroe, connors, hinges, navratilova is a huge joke, Maybe you are birds of same feather. these personalities are different in kind and social net work, some are lesbian, gay and rowdy and drug cheats. this is what you call great personality? rethink and stop distorting history of tennis.. We know the good ones;
After the fifth trophy in Barcelona, comes the fifth at Roland Garros. vamos Rafa, you are the best!!!
Great stuff Rafa, pure class, so glad you won it in two, allows you more rest, really wish you weren't playing Madrid too, don't get me wrong I love you to win them all, but seriously is it physically possible? David played well today in general, so well done.. Good luck for Rome, tough draw!

Question:
Mcenroe,Connors,Hingis,Navratilova,Cash,Becke r.
What did they all have, apart from astonishing tennis ability, that is sadly lacking in today's game?
Answer:
A personality!
with this win the chances for a career grand slam this year seem even bigger than before.....hope he'll win all the grand slams this year.....VAMOS RAFA!!!!!
Hello guys. how did it go? well, over here in the US, it's difficult to get a channel that shows European clay court season except of course when a match is played on US soil... how can one see things happening in Europe? well, I am happy to here that Rafa is dictating the shots but my candid suggestion to Uncle Toni/Rafa team would be for him to please skip one tournament in order to get adequate rest prior to the RG tournament; not really because of RG but because he has to defend his title at Queens immediately after RG before heading to Wimbledon, if he doesn't rest well in advance, it may affect his drive towards the US open which is the only GS title I'm waiting for...Vamos Rafa...I can't wait to see u at Flushing Meadows where you will lift the last GS of the year... Bravo, Bravo Rafa...ur family must be proud of u...keep it up
Bravo Rafael! You are a great champion with a big heart! You never forgot to congrats your oponents, and give them some good words! You are a monster on the cort, and a man with a big heart in life! It's unique....such a sportsmen...
Best wishes Champeone!!!

but of course, bravo rafa, best on clay, best on grass, and fantastic effort oon hard. he's so consistent,so impressive, when you fed up winning everything, hope it's not too soon, could you coach federer maybe, lol, miss that guy
and of course,no sight of the premiers league goals either, but oh,do i love images of home runs of a game famously played everywhere but in europe, namely baseball.how about NBA,is that in europe ? wait, america isn't even good enough to be basketball world champ anymore, better show some lithunian championship,or greek, even spanish, these are the guys going in the basketball finals lately and they're european. gotta watch cnn to see english goals but not on euronews nor eurosports. ridiculous
MURRAY WATCH NADAL YOU'LL LEARN ALOT,WELL DONE NADEL
Nadal is a great player that shows respect to his opponent, his sportmanship is un-equaled unlike some very negative footballers full of ego, i will always support Nadal Great Boy " The greatest sportman in the last fifty years in Spain"
The Boy is just Good & Humble
