Premier League - Managers: Southgate to fight on

Eurosport - Mon, 27 Apr 10:11:00 2009

Reaction from Sunday's Premier League games with Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate vowing to fight on despite a damaging defeat to Arsenal.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Middlesbrough Gareth Southgate - 0

Arsenal 2-0 Middlesbrough

Arsene Wenger: "We want to catch Chelsea and we will give absolutely everything in the last four games. We play Chelsea at home so you never know. Victory was important for us before we go to the semi-finals of Champions League against Manchester United. It's important you put yourself in a strong position in the league. Every win makes you a bit stronger."

Gareth Southgate: "Arsenal are a class team. We knew it would be tough and in the end they have won it pretty comfortably. (Nicklas) Bendtner is clearly interfering with play because he is stood in front of the goalkeeper. That hasn't gone for us but maybe we will get one at home next week against Manchester United. All the games are all crucial for us now. While there is hope we have to keep fighting and we will. One result changes a lot of people's perceptions on things and if we get a result next week then it can turn things on its head."

Blackburn Rovers2-0 Wigan Athletic

Sam Allardyce: "It's a well earned three points at both ends today - some heroic defending and goalkeeping and then we had some quality balls in the box and put them under pressure. We didn't have the goalscorers available but we got the goals we needed. It was a great result, even though at times it was a little fraught in terms of our defending, but we got it right and it's a fantastic win for us. We've been clawing ourselves out ever since I came here. That's 24 points from 17 games now. In equation terms if you got that over the season that's a top-half finish."

Steve Bruce: "I've got no complaints. We spent all week talking about the threat they posed from set-pieces and then gone out and defended like that and we got what we deserved. We can't have that many opportunities and chances on goal and not take one at this level, no matter how well Paul Robinson played. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to find out that that is the area in which we need to improve. The reason we're in the top 10 is that Amr Zaki scored 10 goals by the end of October. He hasn't scored since."

  3. Arsenal's first goal was clearly offside, how can you stand directly in front of the goalie and not be interfering with play. Another decision going to a big team at home. I know Arsenal were the better side but up till then Boro had done ok and if it was
0-0 at half time then things might have turned out differently.

Come on Boro beat Utd and Newcastle and thats the Geordies all but down.

  6. Poor Southgate. An offside goal aginst his team reported as brilliant strike. A delibrate hand ball right infront of the refree not awarded. Game over. Middlesborough condemned to demotion by the officials.

Yes, and pigs might fly; face it Mr. Southgate, your team is likely to finish bottom of the league, it is all your fault and you will be (desevedly) sacked.
