Premier League - Terry hits back at abusive fans

Chelsea skipper John Terry has accused West Ham fans of going too far with their abuse towards him and Frank Lampard at Upton Park.

Hammers fans taunted Terry with chants about his family, while Lampard is targeted having left the club for Stamford Bridge eight years ago.

The pair had the last laugh during Saturday's Barclays Premier League win over their London rivals, and they celebrated in front of the Bobby Moore Stand when Salomon Kalou struck the winner.

Objects from the crowd were thrown in the direction of the pair and referee Mike Dean spoke with Terry to ensure he did not incite home supporters, but the England skipper feels fans should take stick if they dish it out.

"When we scored, I went running over to Lamps and gave them a bit back," Terry said. "There's nothing wrong with that.

"The referee had a quiet word with me and said, 'Don't wind them up'. But if they can give they can take it, and if I can take it I can give it. That's the way it's got to be.

"They have to expect a bit back. When they do get a bit back they all get the hump a little bit. But that is football. I'll take it the rest of my career and I'll certainly give a bit back in my career."

Terry's family, who are West Ham fans, stayed away from the match after learning through the internet the abuse the 28-year-old would suffer.

Hammers supporters have not forgotten that Terry spent five years with their academy before joining Chelsea as a 14-year-old.

Terry, when asked if fans cross the line, added: "I think they do, personally. I can take it, Lamps can take it. It's a little bit more than that but I'm not going to give them a chance to say I'm whinging.

"Walking home with three points and them walking home with nothing, you can't buy that and they can't buy that.

"As a player coming here, knowing you are going to get stick, I swear me and Lamps are so fired up before the game and determined.

"When you get that stick you just want to prove them wrong and shut them up. I think we did that."

Kalou's winner from Lampard's cross and Petr Cech's penalty save from Mark Noble was the perfect way to prepare for Tuesday's clash against Barcelona in the last four of the Champions League.

  1. lol "Scott S" i may be a t*sser but...
At least I'm not a carebear who can't take a bit of abuse - lets think whats worse...
    A. Being Justin Fashanu and getting the abuse he got in the 80's
    B. Being an African guy playing in Spain and getting bananas thrown at him week in week out and monkey chants.
    C. Being a pampered and very average England captain (joke) who can't take a bit of banter about his tealeaf Mum.

    A. and B. managed to keep there heads down and get on with there game without potentially inciting a riot.

What u gonna do Scott? come round my house with your Dad and beat me up?

  3. LAMPS AND TERRY CRITICIZES FANS BAD BEHAVIOUR AND THEN INDULGE IN VERBAL ABUSING THEMSELVES. AS USUAL DOUBLE STANDARDS AND THEY GET PAID £135K A WEEK OR MORE TO DO SO. ALL CHELSKI FANS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THE PAIR OF THEM, THEY DESERVE ALL THEY GET

  4. I am afraid John Terry cannot adopt a tit for tat philosophy as he is a role model not only for Chelsea but also for England. His childish behavaviour was no better then then the West Ham Fans abuse. His comments shows his immaturity and should be stripped of the England Captaincy as his behaviour is no better then those horrid West Ham fans. He earns a vast amount of money and whilst the abuse may not be deemed as acceptable he could contribute to a West Ham Charity which is a better and more classy way of shutting up the vulgar fans!! Grow up John Terry and live with your sins!!

  12. The purpose of abuse and name calling - any abuse or name calling - is to put the target off their game. Although it may sound it at the time, it is rarely personal, it is a way of venting frustration and hopefully has the effect of affecting the player concerned. I have to say though, when fans get 'upset' at getting anything back it makes me laugh at these wimps and is another example of what is wrong with the world - there are seemingly no consequences for any actions and if there are any, then people simply cry.

  13. If the lovies didn't want stick, then Frank should have kept his little Frank in his Pants and John should have told his Mum and "Mum in Law" to use their spare time going to the W.I or doing the allotment, rather than shoplifting.

  14. Lampard, Terry and Joe Cole are all ex West Ham players or from their academy so they should expect the stick they get. Just think of the team they would have with these 3 plus jermain defoe still there. This is just another example of how chelsea have bought success.

  18. personally i think they deserve quite alot of stick as long as it doesnt go 2 far. i dnt think they help themselves calling eachother - 'lamps' and 'jt', i think that give people more incentive. and if someone gets paid 100,000 grand a week, i think im entitled 2 say exactly what i think about them. just as equally they could stand there after the game taking abuse such as, 'u mum is a t**t' and simply reply, 'yea, but u should see her house'!!!
