Premier League - Terry hits back at abusive fans

Chelsea skipper John Terry has accused West Ham fans of going too far with their abuse towards him and Frank Lampard at Upton Park.

FOOTBALL2008-09 Premier League Chelsea captain John Terry - 0

Hammers fans taunted Terry with chants about his family, while Lampard is targeted having left the club for Stamford Bridge eight years ago.

The pair had the last laugh during Saturday's Barclays Premier League win over their London rivals, and they celebrated in front of the Bobby Moore Stand when Salomon Kalou struck the winner.

Objects from the crowd were thrown in the direction of the pair and referee Mike Dean spoke with Terry to ensure he did not incite home supporters, but the England skipper feels fans should take stick if they dish it out.

"When we scored, I went running over to Lamps and gave them a bit back," Terry said. "There's nothing wrong with that.

"The referee had a quiet word with me and said, 'Don't wind them up'. But if they can give they can take it, and if I can take it I can give it. That's the way it's got to be.

"They have to expect a bit back. When they do get a bit back they all get the hump a little bit. But that is football. I'll take it the rest of my career and I'll certainly give a bit back in my career."

Terry's family, who are West Ham fans, stayed away from the match after learning through the internet the abuse the 28-year-old would suffer.

Hammers supporters have not forgotten that Terry spent five years with their academy before joining Chelsea as a 14-year-old.

Terry, when asked if fans cross the line, added: "I think they do, personally. I can take it, Lamps can take it. It's a little bit more than that but I'm not going to give them a chance to say I'm whinging.

"Walking home with three points and them walking home with nothing, you can't buy that and they can't buy that.

"As a player coming here, knowing you are going to get stick, I swear me and Lamps are so fired up before the game and determined.

"When you get that stick you just want to prove them wrong and shut them up. I think we did that."

Kalou's winner from Lampard's cross and Petr Cech's penalty save from Mark Noble was the perfect way to prepare for Tuesday's clash against Barcelona in the last four of the Champions League.

  3. 91 - Eh Chelsea did produce John Terry. He's been there since he was 14. That would be like saying Man U didn't produce Ryan Giggs cause he played for Deans FC before getting picked up by The Red Devils. I don't think the England captain should be "giving stick". He should let his performance do the talking alone. It's part of the game for players to get stick when in rival stadiums. The great and classy players let their feet do the talking.

  6. If you West Ham lot put half as much effort into your football as you do abusing players, you might actually win sometimes.
World class players like Terry and Lampard who started at West Ham obviously will not stay at West Ham. it's the way of football. you are not a big successful rich club, although you like to think you are.
West Ham have always been and always will be known for their hooligan supporters.

  7. As someone who works in the TV production of football, I can tell you all that Terry and Lampard are exactly the types most sane people imagine them to be - thugs who happen to be blessed with some reasonable footballing talent, but are obsessed with money, spit-roasting blonde bimbo wannabe WAGS and being in Fashion or Socialite columns of trash newspapers. They think they're Gods gifts - but see how they shape up for England vs decent opposition - they look like Sunday leaguers at Hackney marshes.
These guys are built up so much by the fools around them they actually believe all the hype surrounding them - when the fact is they are fairly average. But if ur IQ is your shoe size what do you expect?
What has Lampard ever done for England? Nothing. They need to take a look at proper footballers like Kaka or Messi who have more talent in 1 little finger than both of them combined, and yet are still humble, down to Earth human beings.

  9. The only reason West Ham lose players to Chelski is that they have bailed out for the Petro Dollar. If the Rusky's millions get pulled, then chelsea will be the selling club! For years Chelsea were nothing. The so called fans didn't even bother turning up when things got tough. As for The abuse, ITS NOT NEW. Clive Walker, the flasher Shilton shagging Tina, the Arsenal drunks and abusers, Collymore the dog, at al.

  10. How good would Chelsea be without West Ham to feed them good players like John Terry, Frank Lampard, Glen Johnson and Joe Cole nowhere who was the last England player Chelsea produced. A money club a club without soul or values, Just like Mr Terry's relations to mean to work for the future, so steal it from someone else. Come on Chelsea fans who's come good from that cesspool in the last twenty years, who in your own team has come up through the ranks? John Terry from a family of so called West Ham fans who sold his soul to the Devil money.

  12. I'm not a West Ham fan but it must be very annoying when you make great players only to find they leave and wanna play fo Chelsea - if West Ham kept them they would be the new Chelsea, Terry, Lampard, Cole (J) all ex West Ham players you can certainly understand the frustration.

  13. well done to west hams acadamy.great players have come from you but if you had something to offer these top class players then surely they would want to stay with you.at the end of the day who would you rather play for west ham or chelsea.i rest my case.up the chels

  14. I use to like J.T. as a player, but now he is just scum. If one of the fittest people in this country likes to park in places for people with mobility problems, just because he cannot be "ars*d" walking a few extra yards, and comes out with moronic answers like "just send your £25 fine through the post". This "man", who is Englands Captain, should lead by example, and he does, usually with his family in his car. His "little darlings" will grow up to be like their father :- a spoilt brat!

  15. on the one hand Terrys comments are fair enough. but on the other hand he shouldn't really moan about it because it happens to more players than just him and Lampard and will continue to happen. maybe he needs reminding that after one season at chelski he is financially secure for life and can retire at 35 with millions of pounds to play with. the fans that make this lifestyle possible for him are made up of people that don't have a clue how they are going to get on the property ladder and keep things ticking over month to month. if they want to shout some abuse at JT (whos always first to run at the ref screaming in his face when one of team mates gets booked) then they will. the majority of the supporeters don't shout abuse so really he should be able to ignore the ignorant chants and not feel the need to have a little whinge - its a hard life eh terry?

  16. Its about time the west ham fans stopped wineing about all the players they have lost maybe they should have a go at the management of the club for allowing it to happen until that stops you will just be a second rate feeder club

  17. West Ham fans should bear in mind that all the decent players they produce cant wait to leave the club. Some of these players have gone on to be world class. Perhaps they leave because of the attitude of these so calls fans.
Grow up and be pleased your acadamy has produced such great players.
