Baltacha beaten in Barcelona
British number one Elena Baltacha suffered a first round defeat in Barcelona, falling to American Vavara Lepchenko despite taking the first set.
Baltacha, the world's number 90, took the first set on a tie-break before her serve fell apart and Lepchenko powered back to seal the match 6-7(3) 6-1 6-2.
Both players dropped serve twice in the first set as Baltacha snuck through 7-3 in the breaker.
But while Lepchenko, ranked eight places higher than the Scot at 82 in the world, managed to find her rhythm in the second set, Baltacha continued to struggle with her serve.
Lepchenko then cruised through the second set before wrapping up the match, despite a minor hiccup when she was broken whilst serving for it at 5-1 in the third set.
Lepchenko will face Alberta Brianti in the next round, after the Italian dispatched third seed Tsvetana Pironkova 6-1 6-2.
Argentina's Gisela Dulko progressed to the second round with a hard-fought 7-5 6-4 win over Japanese veteran Kimiko Date Krumm and will next face Lucie Hradecka, the Czech player advancing courtesy of a 6-4 6-4 triumph over seventh seeded compatriot Iveta Benesova.
Fourth seed Ekaterina Makarova was another seed to depart the tournament as she fell 7-6(4) 6-3 to Croat Mirjana Lucic, who will face Polona Hercog in the second round after the Slovenian beat Jamie Hampton 6-4 7-5.
Fifth seed Sara Errani fared better, however, with a 6-1 6-0 demolition of Spaniard Maria Teresa Torro to set up a meeting with fellow Italian Maria Elena Camerin.
