Fitton urges fans to keep perspective

Tue 27 May, 05:00 PM

Chairman Andrew Fitton has urged fans to remain realistic about the calibre of players the club will be pursuing in the summer transfer window.Fitton headed a takeover consortium that saved the Robins from seemingly imminent financial ruin in December but, after boss Maurice Malpas was linked with an audacious swoop for former Norwich winger Darren Huckerby last week, the Robins chairman has urged supporters to keep their feet on the ground.

"It is important no one starts getting carried away. We don't want to get ourselves in a mess again," Fitton told the Swindon Advertiser.

"I am sure we will make some signings this summer but you would be concerned if clubs at our level were having to pay high fees for players.

"No one at our level should be splashing the cash, maybe with the exception of Leeds United.

"Doncaster have won promotion to the Championship and that success has been built on solid foundations and that is what we are trying to do here and that is a long-term project."
