Wetherall plays down McCall rift

Tue 27 May, 05:30 PM

Retiring Bradford captain David Wetherall has denied there is underlying tension between himself and boss Stuart McCall as he starts coaching.Wetherall, 37, spent three months as caretaker manager after the dismissal of Colin Todd in February 2007 but opted to shun management in favour of persisting with his playing career, which opened the door for McCall to be appointed last summer.

"There was no way I could have carried on doing both roles as a player and a manager," Wetherall told the Telegraph and Argus. "If the chairman had come to me at the end of the season and said the time was right to take over permanently, I would seriously have thought about giving up playing.

"But I still thought I had got some time left on the field, although I didn't know it was just one season.

"I was delighted when Stuart (McCall) came in. People on the outside will think that's easy to say but they don't know me or the relationship between us.

"There was never going to be a problem: far from it. The way we've got on since the first day he walked back through the door has shown that."
