Babel set to be sacrificed by Reds

Wed, 27 May 09:45:19 2009

Ryan Babel could be the first high-profile departure from Liverpool as manager Rafael Benitez plans his summer restructuring.

It is understood that following talks with the Dutch international's agent, Benitez has told the winger he is free to talk to other clubs about a possible £11million move.

Babel arrived at Anfield in July 2007 and has scored 14 goals in 91 matches for the club - although only 42 of those were as a starter. But despite early promise, he has failed to hold down a regular place in the side and has mainly been used as an impact player from the bench.

He has reportedly asked for assurances that he will be given more of an opportunity next season.

But following discussions with the player's agent, Winnie Haatrecht, Benitez has been unable to offer such guarantees after starting with Babel only six times in the Barclays Premier League this term.

  4. It would not be good for Babel to leave for I can see a great potential and could unleash in the coming years. if he was to leave now, it'd be rather unlikely for him to return later. But when money is limited - unlike other big clubs - there is, sometimes, no other chance. I'd sell Lucas. babel is certainly MUCH MORE promising than N'gog (who has hardly ever kept a ball in play...).

  5. "mmmooose " Comment 14..... why isn't ManU in the list of facts????
is this because they were not as decent as the teams you listed for Liverpool to even compete against?? Well the fact is Liverpool ruled football back then and ManU rule today but you know that old saying “all good things come to an end” or “it comes and goes” or life after Ferguson..

  6. Guys have short memories. Babel played very well before he got injured. He struggled to regain his footing after he came back albeit minimal playing time. He has had great Liverpool moments i.e. the winner against Man U at Anfield 2-1.
Babel is young with huge potential and it will be costly to let him go. Even as a sub he often changes the game with his pace and dribbling skills. Benitez need to give Babel at least 30 minutes a game. Don't make the mistake of addition by subtraction in this particular case.

  8. Liverpool win 57% of Champions League/European Cup games, Manure win 55% moose. U certainly live up to your name. Another FACT! UEFA's Official website, lumps both Cups together, so IT'S 5 EUropean Cups/Champions League titles TO LIVERPOOL, NOT 4 BONEHEAD!! P.S. United still only have 3. :))

When you are the world's best football club you have fans all around the world, millions of them. Obviously not all of them can fit into the stadium to watch the game hence the reason those unlucky enough not to have a ticket will watch the match wherever they prefer. But I guess you Scouser's don't have this problem.

Scott Edwards: I think you'll find 'Bin Dipper' that Liverpool FC has won the European Cup 4 times and the Champions League once. I think Arsenal are a good side, and Inter Milan are champions of Italy, so they must be pretty good also. Only their own fans would call them great (or graet as you spelt it)!

Look at the list; FACTS don't lie Muppet Boy.

It is interesting to read the blurbs from the Scouser's about how great they have been in europe etc etc YAWN. Here is a list of teams they beat to win the European Cup 4 times:
    Dresden
    Hamburg
    Crusaders
    Trabzonspor
    St Etienne
    FC Zurich
    Oulun
    Aberdeen
    CSKA Sofia
    Benfica (2)
    Bilboa
    Odense
    Dynamo Bucharest
    Bayern Munich
    Borussia Munchen Gladbach (2)

    They beat in the final:
    1977 Gladbach 3-1
    1978 Brugges 1-0
    1981 Real Madrid 1-0
    1984 Roma (on pens)

    Liverpool were knocked out by:

    1979 Nottm Forest 2-0 1st round
    1980 Tbilisi 4-2 1st round
    1982 CSKA Sofia 2-1 3rd round (QF)
    1983 Widzew Lodz 4-3 3rd round (QF)
    1985 Juventus 1-0 5th round (F)

When you study the FACTS you can see there is not as much glory as you shout about. FACT is you have not met many decent sides during the whole of Liverpool's entire European Cup history. There is only one greatest team in world football; the reigning English, European and World Champions: MANCHESTER UNITED. . . . read the blurb, these are FACTS!

  15. Babel is PACE and nothing else! he dident show any improvement over those two years .... bad passing, bad positioning, and below average finishing .... how can he become a real striker or a winger? Wish him the best though ....rmemeber his memorable game against Arsenal in the CL Q-finals

  17. Babel was told by Rafa to choose his club over the olympic team as it would jepordise his place in the first team if he left training, Babel chose to got to the olympics and got injured in training before the competion started. Rafa stuck to his guns like Babel did hence his lack of starts. Babel is an awesome talent and I will be sad to see him go, but Rafa asks for 100% commitment which Ryan was unable to give him.
